Trump turns to Putin and Russia for diesel, before the midterms, during a war, where the USA is — apparently — on the Ukrainian side. Russian stocks spike. Sanctions? what Sanctions? Allies? What Allies?
Oh, and also on the same day that the USA sanctions the International Criminal Court which lists Vladimir Putin and Benjamin Netanyahu as war criminals with warrants for their arrest.
btw. A famous South African anti-apartheid judge who helped declare the Gaza situation a #Genocide, won the Peace Prize today.

A cool thing about submarines and torpedoes is that if no one confesses to the deed, it's really hard to know who did it.

Wouldn’t the debris identify whose sub &/or torpedo it was? Love the idea but is it practical? 🤔 Also, this is not to say that these slight difficulties could not be overcome by some smart people who are determined to act… 😈

As for the wreckage implying the shooter - possibly, depending on the weapon. A US Mark 48 ADCAP torpedo blows up quite distinctively (and it better for $5M a shot). But subs can also launch much simpler torpedoes, or even small drones, which are the new hotness for sinking ships, as both Iran and the Houthi are demonstrating.
I don't know if many NATO subs have drones like that, but if they don't have them today, you can bet that some admiral is yelling at a subordinate to go find some ASAP.

@Su_G Nothing like that on rust-bucket Russian tankers. Maybe the newer Russian warships could detect submarines, but I wouldn't count on it with the fancy Type 212 or 214 subs that Germany sells around the world. You don't even need nuke plants anymore - the "AIP" engines are excellent for coastal commerce raiding.
I want Russia to have to escort every one of their tankers or risk having it sunk. I want Mr. Putin to be totally unable to sell any oil that manages to escape Ukraine drone attacks on his refineries.

I beg to differ: we Europeans should deny entry to the Baltic Sea for Putin's shadow fleet. That is not just a moral obligation. It is paramount to protect a sensitive ecosystem already under threat. Also, to live up to our commitments ... . Yet, this is not going to happen. It's a shame!
Ukraine on the other hand will hardly act there. It is concerned not to lose the little support it has. Which in turn is under threat by the rise of the far right here in European countries, I'm afraid.

@chris Remember NSPM-7 exists just me being an anarchist and peacefully protesting is coming dangerously close to catching felonies. Our political "left" are busy shit posting about how "Woke 1 was crazy" on the Nazi site with bonus integrated CSAM generating LLM. A lot of us are very angry and frustrated. Look at the anti flock and data center resistance, it brought people together to take direct action. I know everyone wants the decisive ending but things have to get worse to trigger that.

@chris @pthane The (russian) population in Russia won't do shit, at least not in big enough numbers. Putin knows that and he doesn't care about his population. There is a cult of suffering and the idea, that the West are all nazis and people are saving the world with their sacrifice. And native populations are enprisioned, camped or send of to war (sometimes in the threat of worse happening to their families if they dont).

@chris @pthane Russia does not need to, nor intend to supply diesel. If one drop of Russian diesel's loss can be attributed to Ukraine, that is good enough reason to claim that's why the diesel hasn't been delivered and why the prices haven't come down. Plus, Ukraine will then be "working against American interest" and thus should not get any more US support.
I'm guessing, but quite likely Trump receives a nice chunk of personal wealth for his part in setting this all up. 🤮

@chris United States who has bragged endlessly about being a net exporter of fossil fuels, importing diesel from Soviet Union. I didn't have that in my bingo card. This means Trump shipping boatloads of US dollars to Russia.
This could very well just be scripted fiction part of Trump's PR/TV show and like his deal to buy Potash from Belarus, it could be that Russia has 0 diesel to spare.
But merely ignoring sanctions against Russia should cause treason investigation.

The last part about it was very qualified by the Steele as being metioned not because of the story, but because it was planted by russians who gave it to him. It isnt only Trump's dependence on laundering Russian money, I think Trump is also a big admirer of Putin's money and power which he hopes he can get in the USA.

@Flux @chris welp, let's see. Russia is not exactly at the height of refining capacity since Ukrainian drones are targeting them. If this destabilises Russia further, I'm fine with it.
And I daresay: Russia does not have enough fuel to make a dent in the US market. If I calculated correctly, the US uses ~400k tons of diesel per _day_ in transportation _only_, let alone global total use (which Trump claims). So at least above numbers do not matter at all economically

Russia has to have sufficient inputs for its refineries to be able to produce diesel.
It doesn’t just pick it out out of its bum it needs crude, and that needs to be able to process the correct kind of crude which is probably domestically produced but the way the global economy works that’s not necessarily the case

@chris I worked in the petroleum industry for over 30 years. Saw bulk fuels sold in barrels, cubic metres and the odd time gallons. Always by volume, never by weight. Perhaps trumplestiltskin is saying goodbye to his last remaining brain cells?

@chris @GhostOnTheHalfShell @mikemcrae not to mention the US consumes 3 to 4 million barrels of diesel per day. 500k tons of diesel is about 3million barrels(I went to Statista and a dodgy fuel weight site, but the numbers sound right).
So these numbers are small beer, even if they are true.
