    @fname @chris Maybe this will make the various NATO countries with submarines start sinking Russian tankers (empty ones, of course)?

    A cool thing about submarines and torpedoes is that if no one confesses to the deed, it's really hard to know who did it.

    Is it really so that if “no one confesses to the deed, it's really hard to know who did it”? Don’t they have different shapes that show up on radar? Wouldn’t the debris identify whose sub &/or torpedo it was? Love the idea but is it practical? 🤔 Also, this is not to say that these slight difficulties could not be overcome by some smart people who are determined to act… 😈

    As for the wreckage implying the shooter - possibly, depending on the weapon. A US Mark 48 ADCAP torpedo blows up quite distinctively (and it better for $5M a shot). But subs can also launch much simpler torpedoes, or even small drones, which are the new hotness for sinking ships, as both Iran and the Houthi are demonstrating.

    I don't know if many NATO subs have drones like that, but if they don't have them today, you can bet that some admiral is yelling at a subordinate to go find some ASAP.

    Ok then, is it sonar I mean? Better question maybe: is there anything like radar or sonar that shows the shape of submarines when they’re underwater? (Is this a dumb question? I don’t work in the industry, I’m not a naval expert… )

    @Su_G Nothing like that on rust-bucket Russian tankers. Maybe the newer Russian warships could detect submarines, but I wouldn't count on it with the fancy Type 212 or 214 subs that Germany sells around the world. You don't even need nuke plants anymore - the "AIP" engines are excellent for coastal commerce raiding.

    I want Russia to have to escort every one of their tankers or risk having it sunk. I want Mr. Putin to be totally unable to sell any oil that manages to escape Ukraine drone attacks on his refineries.
