We gain on average 800 new followers per year, but in the last year (since before Linus made the GenAI-code-in-Linux posts) we gained around 1200.
It's great to see the wave of new interest. We're a community that's had 30 years to develop its culture, and things here might work a little bit differently than you expect. But don't let that discourage you from getting involved. This mastodon-account-manager first became a developer in 2018, and it's easily one of the best things she ever did.

@netbsd So, I'm sick and burned out. I have no tact.
So, like, it says no GenAI code, unless you have like explicit approval from the core team.
Have...you ever done that or is it the diplomatic way to say "Ask us directly so we can tell you, personally, to fuck off."

@netbsd Okay. Now my interest is piqued.
So, it sounds like Core's statement here: https://www.netbsd.org/developers/commit-guidelines.html
Is basically saying "There may one day be a case that we accept AI generated code, but the chance of that is so INCREDIBLY unlikely and will have to go through so many people for approval because it is so tainted, that realistically the answer is no but we have this statement here just in case."

@xilatsad I also understand it as accounting for things that can't possibly fall under any reasonable person's understanding of copyright; stuff like whitespace-only changes.

@xilatsad @netbsd a few of my projects have policies that basically say "no contributions from any currently existing LLM or anything trained using similar methods to one, but if you get a transformer model to spit out code without stealing any training data then let's see how good it is."

@netbsd @xilatsad I was going to ask that same question. I'm not quite ready to give up Linux yet, but it's gotten to the point where one has to look at the map and see if any off-ramps are coming up.

> look at the map and see if any off-ramps are coming up
eloquently put. As much as I like FreeBSD & OpenBSD, and haven't tinkered much with NetBSD, the latter's notably-stronger stand against LLM-generated code looks more enticing each day.

Today I saw an interesting and important case raised: NetBSD states it has imported ZFS from FreeBSD, which uses OpenZFS project [1]. Currently, OpenZFS is tainted with LLM-input to some degree. That raised the question of sync between sources in these project and thus the LLM-input to the NetBSD in the end.

@gemelen @netbsd @xilatsad fwiw, NetBSD's ZFS is from the original FreeBSD port of ZFS, which was switched to OpenZFS in FreeBSD 13. That's more about lineage, I have no idea what cross-pollination has happened before or since.

@gemelen @subnetspider just looking at that first commit it's from a PR with a 750 lines change, with one commit and one review comment that prompted the required changes and then some more changes but you don't see the history and thinking that went into any of that
it's wild
it's even more wild how little I care about reviewing such a PR

@analog_feelings @netbsd It is OpenBSD that currently has no journalling FS -- and no LVM.
(I intensely dislike LVM systems, usually for their overcomplexity, but OpenBSD desperately needs one because it has _very_ complex partitioning by default, and that partitioning is part of its security model. Install into a simple root+swap setup & you significantly weaken the OS.)
Saying that, there is an effort: GEFS is being written for 9front and OpenBSD at once.
