I wrote this before #genAI, and I think it might be of interest.
"The politics of writing compilers"
Whoever controls the compiler has some power over the users (both the programmers and the end users), and therefore compilers are political objects.

The new policies for the Linux kernel make it more or less impossible to support a slop-free fork of Linux, so if you're worried about the reliability of your system level software, or have ethical concerns about LLM usage on your computer, the time to act is, well, now.
If you have time this weekend, I recommend you to try one of the slop-free systems: NetBSD, 9front, Haiku, or OpenBSD. If you're adventurous, you could try new AlpineBSD, or research smaller systems, like RedoxOS or FreeDOS. If you don't feel adventurous, you might want to check out anti-AI Linux distributions, like Elementary or Gentoo.
There's no "one solution that fits all". But there's a solution that I chose for myself, and that's NetBSD: it gives me the most freedom, it supports most of my hardware, and can run a great deal of software I need. It's not easy to run, but it's a great learning opportunity. There's quite a few folks around using BSD and capable of giving hints and advice, so if you feel stuck, toot about #netbsd.

Anyway: The worst thing an organization's leaders tolerate is what that organization becomes, and the blast radius of a single toxic contributor is huge and largely invisible. For everyone who speaks up to say this behavior isn't acceptable, there are dozens or hundreds of smart, competent people who peer into your community, see that this is how you live and move along without your ever knowing they exist, on their way to a better life somewhere else.
We don't have to live like this.
"The Black Panther is an animal that when pressured it moves back until it is cornered, then it comes out fighting for life or death."
On Oct. 15, 1966, the Black Panther Party for Self Defense was founded in Oakland, California.
While confronting racism and police violence against the Black community with open militancy, their grassroots "community survival programs" addressed multiracial struggles and provided vital access to food, clothes, housing, healthcare and education.
End-to-end encrypted relays for OCapN https://spritely.institute/news/end-to-end-encrypted-relays-for-ocapn.html
Federated, end-to-end encrypted relaying comes to Spritely Goblins and the OCapN protocol! Relays are federated (like email or ActivityPub) but don't know anything about the contents of communication between users!
Want to like #haxy but immediately turned off by the ASCII art. I am yet to see a website with ASCII art where basic accessibility stuff like increasing the font size doesn't break the layout.

When you sit down and listen to what the "hyped about AI" folks believe, it's equal parts weird and insulting.
But at a surface level, the whole notion of "AGI" (Artificial General Intelligence) is absurd.
No, not the Artificial part. The General part.
Intelligence is not a one-dimensional thing. You can't reduce the human experience to a single scalar value. You can't then build a hierarchy out of General Intelligence scores. This is eugenics thinking. This is fascist thinking (see: Ur Fascism).
And it gets even worse from there!
Really glad to see QGIS ban clankers. :neofox_uwu:
I remember when I was like 7 and thought that a million HUF was like, such a huge amount of money and how wild it will be if one day I'll have that much money in my little metal circus car toy bank thingy...
On an unrelated note, I've been looking at real estate prices around Szeged.
We now note that that we do not waive our attribution requirements for Spritely Goblins, which are present in Apache v2 (and for that matter, CC BY, CC BY-SA, and most FOSS licenses) https://codeberg.org/spritely/goblins/pulls/998/files
So if you train on our codebase, you have to retain attribution, which we consider the most important requirement to motivate development of technology in the commons.
If, somehow, you are using a statistical soup which has no way to preserve attribution, well, we don't permit or approve of dropping such a requirement, and actually, the licenses we use never have.
On the 7th of October, #asker municipality decided to uphold the demolition permit of our house in #avgrunnsdalen.
By doing this, they override the fylkeskommune's recommendation to not demolish a fully usable house for 1.2 million kroners of public money.
They speak in favor of destroying Rolf Røskestads culturally valuable painting of the Oslofjord, representing the Norwegian resistance against fascism in #WW2 (how ironic).

@scott you've already had mentions here & in replies of the biggest options (for the US market at least) but in case it's helpful, I keep a running list of Really Big Bike Trailers to daydream about.

So far, Zig is really cool. The docs remind me of Go. Just like in my Go project, I could skip the language tutorial and look things up when I needed them.
I had some trouble with linking against C, but not nearly as much as with other toolchains.
The trickiest part was figuring out why it wasn't finding <unicorn/unicorn.h>. Straced it, saw that it wasn't looking in /usr/include, looked at zig build --help, found the flag that adds a search prefix, added /usr, bam, it worked. Then I just had to add libunicorn in build.zig.
It's pretty amazing that I could go from zig init to running Unicorn Engine in about 2 hours.
Using Lite-XL for now, at least for this project. It doesn't have syntax highlight or LSP or anything, but zig build --watch and reading unicorn.h are good enough and I 100% prefer having a responsive text editor that I don't have to debug.
The concept of "distributors" for art is weird. I learned about this from the TADC screening. Basically, the cinema couldn't just make a deal with the studio, they had to find a distributor who would distribute it in the country.
And like... why? Why can't they just make a deal with the cinema, we pay the cinema, some of the money goes to them, some goes to the artist, everyone's happy.
