i'm confused when i see people who don't like AI say stuff like "well eventually it'll be good enough to replace me"

and i don't know where that's coming from. sure the hypemen are claiming that, but where's the actual evidence? feels like AI has been plateauing pretty hard for the last couple years for me except maybe for in agentic code

but all the advances in agentic code are hacks built on top of the same shitty LLM model that's stopped improving ages ago and those will also have a ceiling

    "eventually AI will..."

no it won't. the fundamentals of AI haven't gotten measurably better in several years already. there's no evidence that "eventually" anything more will happen than is happening now

    @eniko
I agree, Eniko. I have been saying for a while that a new insight/direction will be needed before there’s any hope that GenAI will emerge. LLMs are a dead end, or at least just one part of the answer.

@eniko To be honest, I wish it would replace me. But at the same time I am well aware that it won't. Even if it could do the work I do with some semblance of reliability, possibly with a lot of assistance and review from low pay workers. Once when things were very bleak I decided to test how long it would take my company to notice that I'm not really doing anything. I concluded that I'm not really employed for the work I'm doing.

@eniko GenAI is good enough to produce in seconds a very (very) crappy version of what takes me hours to do properly.

@eniko the hype and information bubble is so present everywhere that people start believing this kind of propaganda.

I seldom (every couple of months) look at corporate social media. But when I do it is full of AI, AI and more AI. And in between layoffs.

No wonder that people get the overwhelming impression that there is something to it or that it is inevitable.

But here I am still quite happy with using my brain this will not change.

@eniko I don’t fully believe it as well but I understand the reasoning, for a large % of population the slop output is “good enough”, many people don’t care if underlying foundations are rotting away in tech debt, or privacy issues or issues with planet, or whatever, otherwise we wouldn’t be in many situations we are, that could be prevented (non AI stuff). For many it’s a “can I get it for <free> or dirty cheap?” and consideration ends there.

@djlink for that same large percentage of the population there was already plenty of low quality slop they were consuming before AI though

@eniko yeah and this is in fact a faster way to generate said “content” that’s why I think some people might think their time investing in quality might eventually be irrelevant for most people. I don’t agree but I can understand why someone could consider “no one values handcrafted anymore”

@djlink @eniko this is my perception as well.

I heard YouTubers talking about how they generate BG music. It's content that's not at the center of what they do and is okay to be slop. I think it's the same for graphic design on restaurants etc.

When the content is allowed to be sloppy, instead of using stock music or plagiarising something, they prompt the AI.

I really don't like this at all because small time artists would like these small time jobs. I learned a lot as a teenager doing this.

@eniko Remember customer service? Used to be good, you spoke to a person. Then it got outsourced, then became a chat, now a chatbot. Works terribly. Can’t fix real issues.

That’s the fear, that whether it’s better than a human or not is not the question, the question is, will it help the C-levels, board, and stock price?

I fully think the idea of the free AI turning to paid AI and people paying will be a big flop. But corporate AI is likely different.

That’s my take, not claiming I’m going to be right mind you. Feels like so much is impossible to predict these days:/
