For a second there I considered parsing the scripts, turning it into some kind of bytecode or AST in binary, then reading it in in the engine and running an interpreter on it
Then I came to my senses and decided to go from parsing to emitting C code I can just compile, cutting out the middle two steps
Came up with a good way to convert scene scripts to code for You Have Died. Gonna treat every dialogue box or choice box or whatever as its own "scene" as far as the engine is concerned and that way I can tick over to the next part of the script when the current "scene" ends
Has a software engineer or artist here been enlisted before, having to quit almost all of their hobbies and professional development? If yes, could you share your experience, especially around getting back to living a normal life after your conscription ended?

no it won't. the fundamentals of AI haven't gotten measurably better in several years already. there's no evidence that "eventually" anything more will happen than is happening now
i'm confused when i see people who don't like AI say stuff like "well eventually it'll be good enough to replace me"
and i don't know where that's coming from. sure the hypemen are claiming that, but where's the actual evidence? feels like AI has been plateauing pretty hard for the last couple years for me except maybe for in agentic code
but all the advances in agentic code are hacks built on top of the same shitty LLM model that's stopped improving ages ago and those will also have a ceiling

when you feel you haven't done enough work, just run the robot vacuum! that's kinda like work if you squint a bit
you know, guild wars 2 is very like ultima online actually in that there's finite character progression, and after that you kinda just have to make your own goals. which often means the accumulation of wealth/rares, being social, and spending far too much time on the player housing system
which is very interesting since that means that model still works in 2026

i did task. task took literally 5 minutes. but getting ready to do task took 4 hours 🙃
some weeks you get lots of gamedev done and other weeks progress crawls forward and then you beat yourself up about it and that doesn't help so progress is even slower and this is all good and normal and healthy actually

An off switch for "AI" is not enough. *An off switch for "AI" is never enough.* The "AI" has to be actually physically removed from the binary. Any software project who believes "Artificial Intelligence" is a real thing does not have the institutional competence to implement an off switch
