    @sushee There's a whole generation of us that learned programming from typing in code examples from computing/gaming magazines back in the late 1900s. (I learned rudimentary debugging skills by finding my own typos.)

    Absolutely nobody still does this, because as you said, it would be absurd.

    @LonM maybe you can suggest to write very non-optimal and long code, and then say «by the way, this 10 lines could be written as 2, and these 5 are basically not needed if we do this little change, and...»

    this will demonstrate practically, why good abstractions and thinking do matter a lot

    To be fair, I applied the same method to study Calculus at the uni once.

    Literally rewriting, with pen and paper, the course materials from the notes I wrote during the course into the new notebook sentence by sentence trying to understand it as I go.

    It helps to keep the focus and prevents you from skimming through the content too fast.

    It might be not the most effective way, And we had better handled courses after that one, but it is a working approach in some cases.

    @sushee my friend teaches middle school and three kids handed in the same LLM generated essay. When asked about it, they said they had used an LLM but then they had each typed it out themselves. They were honestly shocked this wasn’t considered their own work and there was any issue. Poor kids.

    @sushee hah! I just recommended this strategy in another thread earlier today, but with caveats like how it's only your best option if you're being forced to use LLMs by your employer or something, and it obviates a lot of the perceived benefits of using an LLM in the first place. Much like global thermonuclear war, the only winning move is still not to play. But if you're being forced to lose, minimizing losses is worth the effort.
