Can’t lie, I fully enjoyed project Hail Mary. Just a guy and his buddy: a rock spider alien mechanic. Out to save the world(s) with science—and jokes.

I’ll also add, I thought it was really instructive how few people opted out. We’re conditioned to be prosocial, not rock the boat, and for many of us, to be trusting in institutions.

So they put some caveat in whatever regulation that says “of course this is totally optional” knowing only a tiny crotchety minority will make use of that.

But what is mastodon but a beautiful collection of crotchety weirdos!

Just wrapping up a trip to nyc from sf and I want to share this one thing:

There is ZERO benefit to you to participating in facial recognition. I had resolved to opt out but was worried I would make myself a nuisance or have to submit to some additional verification or something.

No.

You just say “I’m opting out of facial recognition” or “I don’t want my picture taken” and the person waves you through.

That’s it. You save time. No one cares.

I came across a book that was called “English poetry from Tennyson to Whitman”. Ok cool. Flipped through it, all the usual suspects. Tennyson, Poe. Some poems from Dickens and Brontë for some reason.

No Emily Dickinson.

First i thought, maybe it’s just British poets? But Whitman’s right there. She’s in the right time period. There were (one or two) women in there.

Someone more cultured than I tell me what is going on…

[edit: thank you cultured people! It appears the likeliest explanation is that the anthology was pre 1980s, before her poetry had been acknowledged to be important cause men in charge suck very very much]

You’re on a plane, you have a middle seat. Two people get on and they’ve bought the aisle and window seat in your row, in the hopes no one would take the middle. Seeing that their plan has failed, they offer you your choice of the aisle or window so they can sit together. Your feelings about this:

3yo ignores me
Me: the lion is roaring do you hear him?
3yo: my snail is scared!
Me: oh! Is your snail scared of the lion?

Braved the flight from sf to ny with the 5 and 3 year old

They did pretty well, though they didn’t nap

Half hour from landing we’re told, nope, diverting to Philadelphia. Storms.

Land in phl. Told we’ll refuel and head out.

Told we have to wait 30 mins for ground halt to be lifted at jfk.

3yo becoming more and more insane with every passing minute.

We flee. Thank god for family friends in phl.

See lightning as we’re driving in.

Well…happy 4th to us! Kind of a cool thing to stumble into spending the 4th in Philadelphia.

God traveling with children is a whole other ball game.
