Interesting level of high. Was laying here slowly falling asleep. All of a sudden a noise and flash appeared from my own brain, loud and distorted like a lo fi meme sample, the pipes clammering sound from the Source Engine. Actually deafening for a moment, but I recovered quickly because it wasn't a real noise affecting my ears. That was annoying as shit actually, what the hell, bro
The police are informing me there's been a serious misunderstanding.

Obviously you think of the other stuff to add to the TODO list after publishing it. Like, for example, editing toots.
Also, aside from one edge case (clearing visible notifications) which would take some work to speed up, this thing is incredibly snappy. Posts go out suspiciously fast!

Okay, I feel like I'm comfortable sharing this and having other people use it. There's more work I plan to do on #Moonshine, but at this point it's become a reasonably comfortable daily driver for me, which allows me to not run Firefox on my computer in order to interact with the Fediverse.
I was really just holding out for a few more QOL fixes and a refactor to be done. The template system spends a bit of line count to make the bulk of the logic concise.
So yeah I went for my first walking errand since surgery today.
I can fly on one clipped wing. The air yet remembers my name.
Okay, screenshots incoming shortly, but #Moonshine now has the ability to fave, boost and reply to existing statuses. This is a far cry from a complete feature set, but it lets me get the post-it off my wall, and it's probably time for code clean-up before more features.

"Ondansetron" voted anti-nausea medication most likely to have its name screamed at Santa's reindeer during a heavy bender.
I don't know if there's a thing I can confess that makes me sound more like an ascetic old person than "I made my oatmeal with maple syrup instead of brown sugar this morning, as a little treat, and it made me feel joyfully alive."
But man, fuck the haters, maple's expensive as shit these days.
Wife likes to fall asleep watching Astrum or similar channels, because space stuff is a good balance of interesting, but not too interesting. This has led to autoplay ending up on shitty podcastbros talking excitedly about the latest SpaceX rumors by the morning. Which, of course, she closes in disdain when she wakes up.
But this happens like half the time now. Grumble grumble, algorithms.
Alright, back to the cognitive regularly scheduled programming. I'm feeling pretty decent despite having a lot of recovery ahead of me. Very real chance I get back to programming again soon - I can't record any music because my throat is wrecked from the breathing tube, but while I was waiting with no phone or clock to get taken back and blown up like a balloon, I will say - I kept busy by thinking over stack VM stuff, and I think what I want to use it for is customization points in the parser and exec/eval, that type of thing. That's a nice constrained scope where most of the machine can be a crazy fast bytecode interpreter expressed in high-level operations.
Surgery is complete. I am in great pain. But I am now on a road to recovery such that I will not have to endure this suffering ever again.
And the time for that to happen is immediately. Like there's a reason we had the stockades back in the day. I'm not saying every version of the past was healthy about this or needs to be brought back in literal form, we're adults in the 21st century, but there's a *need* worth studying here and examining how we're going to fill it, rather than just... letting stuff simmer for a decade. Letting people act on partial information for a decade. Letting this dude believe in his wishful thinking that he was in the clear for a decade. It's all more explosive if you let it ferment.
My childhood actually would have been *less* complicated if it was public, instead of some missing stair shit, that I was related to a child sex abuser. People could have been safer. Maybe a more genuine rehab could have happened. Who the fuck knows. Dude's dead. I just wonder sometimes. I found out after he died and it ruined a lot of memories and I have no idea what to do about it now?
I think "well what SHOULD count as atonement" is something that's a massive unanswered question, and particularly in online leftist spaces, you'll see people pull in a hundred different directions and all really angry and loud about it. I don't want to make this mostly a critique of online leftism, but I do think the lack of a coherent atonement model is a thing that's offputting to a lot of people.
At a bare minimum, I think... when you hurt one of us, it's a strike against us all. So while I don't want mob justice, atonement is not just a "between two people" thing. At a bare minimum you don't get privacy about what you did. Part of the deal is that everybody knows, and gets to independently decide how to treat you about it. Maybe some people know to avoid you now. Maybe some people forgive you. It's a lot of personal decisions that can't even start until what you did is public.
Something I'm really grinding my teeth about, with Cornell, and now with Jacob Gellar, is...
Being able to serve your time and become "whole" is a good feature of society, there's a reason we keep reinventing that. Obviously not everybody's out here sexually assaulting people specifically. But to be human is to harm people sometimes.
The problem becomes that these institutions, when they use light and/or private punishments, they give the false impression, "oh I've done my time, I'm whole with society." It's absolution laundering. I won't talk about how it downplays the severity of rape because other people have done that more eloquently than I could at the moment. But nobody wants to think they're a bad person. And it's part of rape culture that we do a performative, vestigial slap on the wrist for guys so that we don't "ruin their lives," which leaves them feeling atoned from like a minimum viable product version of atonement.
Here's something that I'd like some advice on, where the Fediverse will be far more useful than search engines these days.
I'm trying to test (intentional) process aborts on NetBSD, which include some text printed like:
```
Abort trap (core dumped) ( "$PROGRAM" "$@" ) > "$TMP_STDOUT" 2> "$TMP_STDERR"
```
The underlying process is calling the abort() system call. Now, you might expect that this notice is printed to STDERR, but it seems to somehow be circumventing my STDERR capture. Anybody know how this works, and how I can capture it properly as text output?
EDIT: Nevermind, I found the `quick_exit` libc function. That better fits what I'm trying to do, and doesn't involve signal nastiness. I'm still a little intellectually curious though.
Ancient scriptures describe a small country that nevertheless had many embassies across the wider continent, and which supported itself on exports of ground beef sandwiches. It was technically a form of government known as a monarchy, but their high priest - known for his pointed metal hat - was a benevolent man, and insisted on a form of individualist democracy for all citizens of Ber-Gerking.
Thinking about this a bit more, I think there's a worthwhile analogy that helps here? I have been personally annoyed in the past, sometimes, by people who try to go gluten free despite not having a health problem. If your body *can* tolerate wheat, it can be a pretty load-bearing part of a healthy diet! People have been eating bread for millennia. If you avoid it for no reason, that can actually be *less* healthy, and it's frustrating to see people use it as a token for smugness, like when I was growing up and people operated on different levels of strictness re Ellen G. White's Health Message.
But in the end, the massive demand for gluten-free products, however individually misguided, made life a lot easier for people like me, with actual medical sensitivities. The posers are probably why I can buy Schar loaves at a normal grocery store at non-excruciating prices.
