And apologies dear Fedi friends if I continue to write about #WSocial, but I have my reasons:
1) The platform is fully endorsed by the European Commission!!! With von der Leyen taking time away from G7 meetings to do a video ad for their launch (!!!)
2) The #openweb #privacy destroying #EUKidsAct has been discussed between W and the EC during a meeting in early September. If W Identity is the thing implementing it in Europe, we're all in trouble as they publish personal details to the open web

@_elena I've been in atproto circles a bit, and its not just that their publishing personal details. Because of the way atproto works, they're publishing these details and then broadcasting these details on to the firehouse. All it really needs is someone to listen to the firehouse for w socials broadcasts of this data and they can record these details as they're broadcasted.

@_elena It is a shame for the fediverse, but by covering the corruption and incompetence by W you're helping the folks and their groups on the fediverse and beyond.
This is a massive threat to their users privacy and the EU is complicit in it's promotion of W.
Questions need to be asked of both.
The fact that the W fanboys are bullying tells us you are having an impact.
We can point at your series, it's asking serious questions that W can't or won't answer.

I've been really disturbed by how a bunch of corporates launched their open social network in DAVOS, tried to hide the source code came from Bluesky, then quietly went closed-source à la Truth Social and now they are cozying up to the European Commission with identity verification. OVER MY DEAD BODY.
Plus they keep messing up in ways big and small

If you knew how much I've been struggling to get mainstream media to report about W's mishaps. I even served up big scoops on a silver platter to several journalists... only to hear that they needed more info or that it was too niche.

@FediThing 🤷‍♀️ NO IDEA and there are even multiple people who filed freedom of information requests to get notes taken during meetings between W Social and the EC (at least 8-9 meetings this year, most remote via video conference, but some in person in Brussels). Some of the info is redacted and it's nearly impossible to get ideas about motives

Guess I'm mainly wondering what is in it for Leyen if she backs W?
They're not a huge company and barely anyone uses them, there's no ethical or practical advantage in using them, so why does she care so much?

@FediThing the fact that the European Commission took YEARS to add the Mastodon + Bluesky logos to their footer (replacing X) and yet as soon as they moved from Bluesky to W’s server they IMMEDIATELY added the W logo in place of the Bluesky one.
I literally screamed out loud when I saw it! (my poor husband is always like: « what’s wrong ? »)

I've never really liked von der Leyen, so I'd guess it was the standard reason for caring - either money now or the promise of a well remunerated position in big tech once she's finished in politics. Neither would be a good look.
