Up to this point, Zuckerberg's command of the incel-tech market suggested that the customer for these weapons was a skeevy 4chan/manosphere boy living in the basement with no job. Apple's attempt to muscle in to the incel-tech market indicates they think the real customer for predatory devices is an affluent, older Tesla-driving male with "good taste"
Anyone who is surprised by EFF's latest pro-slop position should know that this is no sudden pivot.
Here's EFF in July, fighting against NY legislation that would legally compel AI scrapers to identify themselves with accurate user-agents:

And don't miss this gem from June, in which EFF rails against IETF proposals that would empower website owners with scraper-blocking standards that might really work:
> [...] the AI Preferences working group is working on proposals to give publishers a way to express “preference signals” against crawling web data for AI-related purposes [...]
> Another working group [...] is pursuing efforts to protect sites from overly-aggressive bots that strain website resources [...] standards changes that would enable sites to cryptographically identify bots so that they can more easily block anyone they wish [...]
> [...] we are fighting back against these threats to open access [...]

Speaking of surveillance infesting public parks, several Flocks in SF Golden Gate Park on Crossover and Kezar. And city-run dome cams are multiplying along MLK and the JFK Promenade. Even walking, jogging or biking in a placid park is suspicious activity for the American police state
The patent illustration directly shows a male directing his surveillant gaze at a woman. Plain and simple, openly and unambiguously, Meta is in the incel-tech business

A quintessentially fascist image
The fact that the instance admin(s?) responsible for sending the post history of a fedi user to OpenAI for "political ideology analysis" call themselves anarchists is simply tragic. How could anyone with this outlook trust and feed surveillance systems that reify hierarchy and make our worst enemies stronger. This is cop-think. The only conversation anarchists should be having about "AI" is how to most effectively sabotage and destroy this fascist technology

Very surprised this hasn't blown up yet. But in case you haven't heard, admins of so-far unnamed "popular" federated instances are feeding fedi users' post history to OpenAI for "political ideology analysis" under the delusion that this is an appropriate moderation practice. Surely there are others who might have a problem with this?
@piefedadmin has the details: https://join.piefed.social/2026/05/04/ai-assisted-moderation-in-the-fediverse-is-happening-now-what/
It may well be true that we're observing the terminal arc which leads to the implosion and death of the FOSS movement. But suggestion that the deciding factor isn't the attack from without, but a variable from within - the socio-political cluelessness of the movement's own participants. Yesterday's demand to "keep politics out of it" is today's embrace of AI psychosis

So Epstein exploited the fact that Chomsky was making a reactionary argument. This will make everything better

> We need to turn to ancestral memory, to the time of sympathetic magic. When folks knew something was wrong, but it was hard to understand what was going on […] the Fae in this realm are our modern corporations. They grew their power by gathering all your virtual footprints. They created more digital pieces of you. They took the virtual dust of where you wandered online. They created your digital poppet and sold duplicates of your virtual dust with others. They traded what they gathered about you to each other. At first to influence you, they wanted to sell you their wares in their markets — but the Fae in this realm also gave you poisonous fruit to eat. The more you ate of the fruit, the more you gave them.

Every time there's news from Mozilla we see a lot of takes around here along the lines of: they're clueless, their heads are in the sand, they don't know their userbase.
Alternative interpretation: We're looking at another case very much like Bluesky - a corporation with somewhat-openwashed branding which knows exactly who their userbase is, hates it, and wants a different one.
The rationale is clear enough; the browser is just a massive opportunity for datamining. The "AI" startups can only dream of controlling a browser with even the marketshare of Firefox. In that light, it's no use having a userbase of technically competent, privacy-aware dissidents who can work around the extractive dark patterns. Let's face it people, we're not profitable to surveillance capitalism
Why has everyone arguing for more government involvement in the fediverse suddenly forgotten that government is a fascist kakistocracy in the so-called US and is pointing in a worryingly similar direction across the EU, the UK and Canada?
At this very moment there are no less than 19 internet repression bills under review in the US Congress. What's more, it's **the Democrats** who are leading the charge on age verification. The absolute last thing we need right now is a bunch of people petitioning the politicians they parasocially identify with to pay more attention to the fediverse
There's a certain kind around here who insists on referring to Zuckerberg's Threads as a "fediverse instance". OK, that "fediverse instance" is nonconsensually using the photos of real children in their schoolgirl uniforms to market itself to adult men. Do you think that "fediverse instance" should be defederated?

In his recent FediCon talk, Evan Prodromou implicitly rationalized his collaboration with Meta by proclaiming, "you don't negotiate with friends". Maybe not, but you don't hand enemies the keys to your kingdom either, which is exactly what he has done by giving Meta seats at the table of the ActivityPub working group. And for that matter, accepting a relatively significant sum of money from those enemies to fund your foundation goes rather beyond the negotiation phase as well, does it not?
As it stands, we have a hostile element enmeshed in the development process which undergirds the entire network, all the while systematically violating every last consent boundary the fedi has defined and defended over the course of its history. This is a power imbalance so egregious and amoral that it negates the raison d'etre of the fediverse altogether. Meta must be removed from SWICG

The development process of the protocol is poisoned by the presence of Meta. Any significant revision the organization proposes will be perceived as an aspect of the Meta incursion, suspected and resisted, whatever its actual origin. The backlash to any perceived attempt by Meta to manipulate the backbone of the fedi could lead to an existential crisis.
Under these circumstances the only way to avoid such a backlash is to refrain from advancing protocol development at all, which is also unsustainable. The way out of this is the ejection of the Meta intruders from SWICG and any other working group which has an influence on the future of ActivityPub.

#DefederateMeta #FediPact #Meta #Zuckerberg #Threads #Facebook #Instagram #SocialWebFoundation #SWICG
We already know that the Social Web Foundation and SWICG leadership will ignore the latest news of Meta's mass datacrime against the fediverse and continue enabling the parasitic Zuckerberg entity to influence the future of ActivityPub development by facilitating its presence on the W3C working group overseeing AP. This is not a sustainable arrangement.
There is absolutely no basis of trust whatsoever between the fediverse network of communities and Meta. The idea that representatives of this slimy fascist operation are insinuated into the organization shaping the next generation of the protocol underlying our network, while they simultaneously inflict nonconsenual predatory "AI" extractivism against us, is ludicrous and intolerable. This right here is the destruction of every single value the fediverse claims to stand for in one fell swoop.
