As I reflected on what I experienced at #FOSDEM, the idea of organizing a devroom dedicated to #diversity was born.
Together with @Gina @_elena we submitted the proposal to organise a #DEI devroom at #FOSDEM27. It got rejected. 😢💔
Every year we leave #FOSDEM inspired by the people we meet & the passion for #opensource. And every year we also find ourselves thinking about how much greater it could be if more people with different perspectives were part of those conversations.

@btel @Gina @_elena thanks for your kind words, Bartosz! 🙏🧡 it makes me also very sad to see this rejection for the topics of #diversity at #FOSDEM. I will try again next year. Never give up! 💪

@RosannaSibora @Gina @_elena great ! Please keep me informed. If there is any kind of an informal gathering, I will be also happy to attend (more to learn than to contribute, I am afraid).

@btel @Gina @_elena Our goal was to deliver talks inspiring everyone who feels underrepresented in #FOSS to take up space. We wanted to create a positive and inclusive track, with lots of humor, and with moments to reflect on how we can all become better allies. We wanted to discuss community, leadership, and representation in the #FOSS ecosystem. Of course we wanted to reflect on how to make future #FOSDEM events more diverse and welcoming for all. #dei

@RosannaSibora and @_elena this is such a shame. I've been going to #FOSDEM for about 6 years now and every year it's a sea of white men.
This track could have been an opportunity to include some fresh perspectives and talk about diversity in #FOSS.
We had an awesome group of organizers coming from @nextcloud , @openproject , @fdroidorg , Red Hat, @SUSE , @drupal , @linuxfoundation EU, and OSPO's.
We were so excited that we were already designing stickers and organizing funds for speakers ☹️

@Gina @RosannaSibora @_elena that would have been such a meaningful and needed devroom. We really need to continue working on diversity and that would have been a great way to do so.

@Gina @_elena @nextcloud @fdroidorg @SUSE @drupal @linuxfoundation I’m curious which #foss conference will be open and courageous to create a space for diversity in #OpenSource… 🤔

@RosannaSibora That's disappointing. I've never been since it's on the other side of the planet, but I'm guessing it's in dire need of some diversification.

@RosannaSibora @Gina @_elena oh no, that sucks! Sorry to hear. I was hoping that the #FOSDEM organizers would do better than this.
I hope you’re not too discouraged to try again!

oh no, this is really sad. it would have been such a great addition.
#FOSDEM26 was my first and aside from the vastness of the campus which I noticed, I also noticed that #FOSDEM seem to be heavy on white males and isn't diverse nor inclusive in the ways FOSS should be.

@canleaf genuine question: which kind of value has to isolate talks about diversity into a dedicated devroom, instead of spreading them across other community-oriented rooms and main tracks at #FOSDEM27 ?

You will find tons of presos and discussions on DEI(B) all across the devrooms and tracks when you do a search like "diversity" site:fosdem.org - the topic has been discussed for many years. I also see it all over the place at the projects' own conferences.

@RosannaSibora @Gina @_elena The screenshot mentions not being clear but it's still not clear whether they don't want a DEI devroom, reject your proposal for it or are simply out of rooms. I could understand the latter but would feel angry at the formers. I attended fosdem from the first osdem, I care about DEI.

@edarchis @RosannaSibora @Gina @_elena From my perspective it's because more and more FOSS communities have been infiltrated by right-wing toxic manosphere trash or, at best, the "we don't want to be political" enablers/liars/self-deluders. DEI is a lightning rod for bigots, so organizers are either in that camp or don't want to attract the attention (thereby capitulating).
Just my $0.02 on it though. Make enough noise and I'm sure somebody in the decision tree will slop-generate a PR letter explaining away their decision.
