@davidrevoy this is totally like the silent chats in modern offices, now that everyone just talks to their corporate minder rather than risk appearing foolish in publish and maybe, like, actually building up some common, institutional knowledge.
That makes think of all the times my colleague is so happy of a new thing he learned from IA when he could just have asked me ...
@nooe asking an AI only embarrasses you to a multinational corporation and all future employers, but asking a friend may embarrass you to a person you care about.
No *good* reason to ask an AI instead, but maybe a *real* reason.
@davidrevoy
@davidrevoy ❤️
Next step: the quick lookup with the magic wand by saying the name of the spell (local full-text search), the interactive map of spell ingredients (ontology of recipes), the trip to the library for the librarians favorite spells (support professionals), expertise in dancing with fast, basic spells (did you watch Frieren and see how Fern utterly obliterated much more sophisticated magic by simply being more experienced with the basics?).
Or for code:

☺
@davidrevoy PS: while my toot sounds funny (and hopefully *is* funny ☺), I’m dead serious about the link.
@ArneBab Watching Fern and Frieren dish out some "basic offensive magic" is always the highlight of an episode.
@Chrontius yes – love seeing that ☺
@Chrontius @ArneBab I loved that scene in the Class A exam
"she overwhelmed me with basic offensive magic, can you believe it?" while laying in a giant crater
@beeoproblem yes, that was just awesome ☺
(and also shows how readily Frieren (the anime) dishes out massively powerful magic without feeling like a power-creep)
@Chrontius
@davidrevoy - I’d rather ask a friend than a machine, and it’s a great opportunity to connect and grow deeper with someone else. I think that’s cool and good (when done in good faith of course)
@heroicthehobbyist True, of course. The main goal of this scenario for me was to show how her brain become indeed lazier. I wanted to expose her reasons, but I also wanted to break her "too moral" perfect appearance with this plot-twist. I'm starting an arc of her without her AI Parrot!
@heroicthehobbyist @davidrevoy yesss!
@davidrevoy @heroicthehobbyist loved it!
@davidrevoy @heroicthehobbyist She has to start fixing herself somewhere, now that the problem has been observed, acknowledged and acted upon.
Her friend might be inclined to help her both with that and remind her how to figure out/find out such things for oneself.
@davidrevoy - I think you very well succeeded! Keep making great art for all of us to enjoy. I know you know but we all very much appreciate your hard work and creativity!
Reject AI (Artificial Intelligence)! Embrace AI (Allies Intelligence)!
@davidrevoy It's not just me that now has Johnny Cash playing in their head, right? 😅
@mjc0961 Oh, I had no idea someone would find this ref! Well done.
"And it burns, burns, burns..." 🎶
@mjc0961 @davidrevoy Nope, me too. :)
@davidrevoy I'm all for talking to people (on- or offline instead) instead of statistical parrots!
@davidrevoy
jokes on you, my brain was already lazy
@light lol 🤣
@davidrevoy
(I don't use AI, that's just how I am)
@davidrevoy But...but sharing knowledge with other humans is how we used to do it 🥹
@trevdev @davidrevoy On one hand, you have bad human interactions like Stack Overflow and GitHub repository managers closing question threads for no reason. Here on Fedi, rarely I asked a question and got answers (even including the proper hashtags and everything). Then no wonder some people prefer asking AI questions.
But, on the other hand, that wasn't ever a problem for AI to solve, it was a social problem first. Who grew this hostility to people? What made SO moderators so badly looked upon? Why do some people seem to have such a god complex when they have any position of power? Who's gaining with the destruction of human collaboration and human relationships?
@gustavo @davidrevoy having been raised by an "angry moderator" and being frequently told to just go "figure it out," I've benefited from not having to ask questions, and a high anxiety for when I do have to ask questions. I dunno. I think in software people are more open to sharing than in other spaces, because of enthusiasm, but only if you don't come across the wrong* way. As to all of your other questions around that, man, I don't know. Other people confuse me
@trevdev @davidrevoy I could comment on that, but the mere fact I'm on an anti-fascist instance and currently listening to a communist video makes me thing I'm not the best person to talk about that (I would answer this in a too biased way, focusing only on the late capitalism related issues and probably ignoring other social issues). :ablobcatknitsweats:
@gustavo @davidrevoy Yep, same but different anxiety, man
@gustavo @trevdev @davidrevoy Power ties people to their current biases.
Give an asshole some power and all you get is a worse asshole.
@trevdev
But sometimes not... eg the phrase rtfm even when the reason for the question is the fm is a badly written PoS.
@davidrevoy
@MurrayWindripper @davidrevoy Or, perhaps, *intensive amounts of reading* is not how you learn well. With RTFM YMMV
@davidrevoy It was "Ignisme!", wasn't it? 🤡
@davidrevoy (On a more serious note, if fireball is pyrobolus, then ring of fire would probably be pyrocircus?)
@farbenstau "Ignisme!" 🤣
Bravo for the old references!
Pyrocircus sounds good. I have later episode already drafted, and her quest for this spell get an answer, I wrote "Ringus Pyrus" on my script, but I'll fix it for "Pyrocircus" way better. Thanks!
@davidrevoy Now I'm imagining her in the pose like in the second panel of the ignisme/pyrobolus strip, maybe with a more energetic/impish facial expression, and a tornado-like ring/vortex of fire emanating from the center of her open palm …
Kind of like "Muteo!", but fired forward rather than behind?
@davidrevoy And now that we have established "pyrobolus" and "pyrocircus" as "canon", I wonder if there is also a "pyrotriangulusaequilaterus" (or something like that, I don't speak Latin) spell and what it might be useful for …
@davidrevoy Oh! Oh! As a pointer! Like, with one angle pointing towards the ground for "Here!", or one pointing to a side for "turn this way", or pointing up for "proceed straight ahead"!
@davidrevoy Now what might Pyrorectangulus and Pyroquadrus be good for?
@davidrevoy Setting fire to trigonometry books, I guess?
@davidrevoy Or for casting magic portals that are actually door-shaped, rather than circular? Or for burning your way through locked wooden doors? #NerdSnipedByDavidRevoy
@davidrevoy In a world with magic, would there be a profession that reverse engineers spells/spellbooks, just like people reverse engineer computer programs for a living on ours?
@davidrevoy lowkey amazing idea
Getting friends to help you instead of corporate statistical genie in a bottle
@davidrevoy
Son AI Parrot a scanné puis détruit son grimoire de sorts ?
@gub Elle l'avait herbergé dans les nuages, sauf qu'il y a eu du vent. 😆
@davidrevoy
Ah ces gens qui ne font pas de sauvegardes…
@davidrevoy cute emotive ears
@d1 I was thinking this as well. So many artists draw characters with ears that *should* be emotive, and aren't, and it always bugs me.
@davidrevoy I’ve heard anecdotes from friends of executives calling people “Claude” instead of their actual names by accident.
@drahardja Haha 🤣 Thank you for sharing this one, very funny!
@drahardja @davidrevoy I’ve seen this first hand, in a meeting with a dozen other people.
The awkward silence was palpable, even over Zoom.
@ryanboswell @davidrevoy Omg it’s spreading
@drahardja @davidrevoy You are so right about that one chat!
(Though chat is just kinda cute imho:))
@davidrevoy To cast Ring of Fire, you must first summon the spirit of Johnny Cash, then find some horn players.
🎶
@ziphi 💜 Bravo for getting this ref :)
@davidrevoy I used to play that song at local restaurants. I and the other lead guitarist would mimic the horn harmonies while the rhythm guy would strum and sing.
@davidrevoy Designing AI assistants to use natural language, building interfaces that look like message app conversations, even way back when they decided to give early voice assistants human sounding voices (feminine, of course). They deliberately hijacked the human need to socialise,which was one of the most sinister decisions they ever made. Far more, I think, than the whole copyright debacle. sorry, I needed to vent that out.
I hope eventually Cepper can learn to have a real conversation again without it feeling awkward
@davidrevoy @LonM it also showed that what they really want are slaves
@davidrevoy It's okay guys, you don't need AI, I have all the random information you need
