NEXT WEEK ON #ThePlaylist
Spooky season is once again very much upon us, and rather than do a generic Halloween playlist, we thought we'd go down the different, potentially more interesting route of:
Underworld
So will it be songs about Orpheus or Hades, bangers from the legendary British dance act, or songs about fictional lingerie factories in Manchester?
Sling your suggestions this way using #ThePlaylistSuggestion or, the form on the site ( https://djdarren.site/archive/suggestions/ ) and together we'll put together two solid hours of spooky underworldly tunes.

@DJDarren There are far too many songs in my library about hell, so cutting it down to four this week was agonising and I think I have done a bad job, honestly. I picked songs I like personally over songs with more general appeal 😅
Dance With The Dead - From Hell
Beast in Black - From Hell With Love
Lamb of God - Walk With Me In Hell
Darren Korb and Ashley Barrett - In The Blood (because it's the end credits song for the video game Hades, which is about the Greek underworld)
And as a bed suggestion, I think anything ELSE from the Hades soundtrack would work. My vote is for Out of Tartarus because it's iconic. #ThePlaylistSuggestion

@astronomerritt @DJDarren #ThePlaylistSuggestion ha, my mind went straight to a different soundtrack! I was never quite able to follow the story in the Underworld films, but they looked and sounded cool 😁
Outside of that...
Brody Dalle - Underworld
Minuit Machine - Underworld
Scowl - Not Hell, Not Heaven
CHVRCHES - Heaven/Hell

OK, let me be the obvious one: Iron Maiden's The Number of the Beast.
But... how about Satan singing wistfully about the world up there? Up There - South Park Bigger Longer and Uncut Soundtrack

@DJDarren I see Swisslet's Ash Orpheus and raise him a David Sylvian Orpheus.
And somewhere from the depths of my mind I remember the name of the Hebrew underworld and thus suggest Sheol by Face Culler, which is excellent value for money as it is (a) spooky (b) less than two minutes

Frank & Walters - Underground
Tom Waits - Way Down in the Hole
AC/DC - Hell ain't a bad place to be
The Velvet Underground - Pale Blue Eyes
(I know there are more obvious AC/DC songs but this is my favourite. For Tom Waits I was going to go for Hell Broke Luce but you played that recently, also he has a song called Underground but I think this one might be slightly more #ThePlaylist-friendly.)

Hieronymus by The Clouds. Hieronymus Bosch's paintings were full of religious concepts, including hell (aka the underworld).

@DJDarren from the "Musical Roleplaying Game" - Stray Gods, there's an epic track "Challenging A Queen"
There's 3 versions due to the choices you make.
Find the red album version.
It's absolutely brilliant and has Laura Bailey rapping an epic diss....

Curtis Mayfield - (Don't Worry) If There's a Hell Below, We're All Going to Go
(there's a three-and-a-half minute version of this, and there's an eight minute version. Choose wisely.)
Frankie Archer - Close the Coalhouse Door
(because it's about mining. There are many versions of this song, but Frankie Archer's take was one I found by chance, I'd never heard of her before and it blew me away. Now a huge fan. She's great.)
Mercury Rev - Holes
(holes, as it says, dug by little moles - so they must be underground tunnels)
The Unthanks - The Testimony of Patience Kershaw
(again, it's a song about mining.)

Bed suggestion:
Black Dyke Band - Gresford (The Miners' Hymn)

I could suggest lots of songs about mining, but I'd better stop there.

@DJDarren my #hiphop #thePlaylistSuggestion suggestions for the theme Underworld are various anthems about worlds below our feet:
Gravediggaz - 6 Feet Deep (I forgot how amazing this track is, so thank you for coming with a theme that brought me back to it!)
Das EFX - Straight Out the Sewer
Lords of the Underground - Keep It Underground

As one of #ThePlaylist's Edinburgh-based representatives it's almost impossible not to fall into a Trainspotting-based trap of obvious Underworld recommendations, but instead I'm going with this, which I still say is Danny Boyle's better Edinburgh film:
🪦 Leftfield - Shallow Grave
Plus there's these:
🎤 Abdominal & DJ Format - Heaven's Demon
🔥 Squirrel Nut Zippers - Hell
...And I might have suggested the Dodge Brothers but I see I did that in 2024!

@DJDarren A second #AusMusic suggestion on the theme "Underworld" is
Shooting Stars by Bag Raiders.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAdLRRbzOv4
How does it fit?
1) Well being "down under" (both in location and musical selection) everything is in reverse, so your underworld is my space.
2) As the meme this song spawned demonstrates, you spin around every which way in the ether, and that's very underworld'ish.
