you ever feel completely alienated from the only thing you've ever been any good at
and realize that, although you hadn't planned on it anyway, you really will never work in that industry again

@eevee sorta, although my response to it is to focus on building spaces where i would belong
@whitequark @eevee The trouble with building space where I belong is that I'm often the only one there
@eevee all the time 😔
@eevee Where's that "I'm in this toot and I don't like it" meme when I need it?
@eevee my latest job search is increasingly making me think this, I have yet to find a single job post that's not asking applicants to pledge allegiance to the slop machine
@eevee the only one I did find had such shit pay I wouldn't even be breaking even
@eevee yeah, although it's more "alienation is finally reaching that threshold only to zoom past it"
me: wow computer hacking is interesting
also me: huh this scene is toxic
me: well i'll guess i learn programming then
also me: weeeeeelp
by the time the well poisoner 3000 launched i was already quite toasty
@eevee still yeah getting whiplash from the endless heel turns
@eevee not really but i have felt extremely alienated from other aspects i consider a part of my selfhood and it sucked shit so your thing also seems bad
@eevee yes to the first part, not sure about the second yet but I’m getting vibes
@eevee unfortunately i literally have zero other prospects, so i’m stuck in this shitshow rollercoaster for eternity (or until it shoots off the tracks and crashes into the ground like in rollercoaster tycoon)
@eevee yes
@eevee 😔
@eevee why would you deal me this much psychic damage this early in the day
@eevee yep
@eevee Ah, sadly, yeah. In my case, a brain insult made the decision for me, but so many doors I used to just phase through are now solidly shut. May you find a new path.
@eevee
Kinda me when I became totally disabled by COVID in 2020. No more running cables.
@eevee I've now experienced this twice, and I'm very angry about it
@eevee yeah, although at least I had music to fall back on (as another industry that's been completely fucked by technology, AI, and oversaturation)
@eevee I still enjoy programming but like hell am I ever going to do it for a paycheck ever again
@eevee not quite. It's going to be a deliberate choice for me.
@eevee packed our heads with a whole lot of dumb shit to remember forever
@eevee I am literally quitting IT per November. After 26 years of sysadmin and consulting I’m moving to teaching. So yeah…
@eevee@slime.global as someone still in the industry, i'd say be grateful. Its all AI and tokenmaxing now, and I want out...
@eevee@slime.global I'm thinking about going into mycology next, tbh
@eevee Kinda yeah
@eevee @enkiv2 It turned out I could retire early, but before that I was looking for jobs in teaching or medical work, because software is dead now and tech is almost universally a toxic and malevolent force in people’s lives now. Still angry about it.
I think there are a lot of us going through grief about the fact that our profession, which we identified strongly with, has been deliberately destroyed. There used to be pockets where the craft was valued, but those have almost all been obliterated. And the people responsible are so insufferably smug about it.
