    Wtf is up with wildlife cameras named as if I'm buying a group of mercenaries capable of taking over a small south-American island nation. I just want a grainy photo of a duck ffs.

    "With the Recon Dark Force Elite HP5 Ultra and Browning Spec Ops Elite HP5 Ultra Strike Force X you not only take great photos of ducks but also take over four out of five island nations."

    review: "Excellent pigeon photos. Easy set-up. It used 4G to call in an airstrike on the neighbours cat eating our flowers.".

    screenshot of a brands website. This one is especially bad at naming.

    @Pepijn Also, they all seem to require apps. “Enter an SMTP server and it will email you a file” is now a premium feature…

    @Pepijn oh no, did they enshittify camera traps? Did the LARPers/doomsday-preppers vertical overtake biologists and conservationists?

    @Pepijn my parents installed one in their garden. It looks like a GI Joe doll (ahem, "action figure")'s backpack on a flimsy metal stick. It requires an app, but at least it doesn't connect to their home wifi. Every morning, my mother walks out to collect last night's videos from the camera's wifi.

    They spotted hedgehogs, deer, martens and several raccoons roaming their garden.
    Raccoons are apparently a thing in northern Germany, descendants of fur-farm animals that escaped during WW2.

    @Pepijn

    Yeah I can imagine these are mostly bought by creepy types stalking their exes. So marketing at this group is super on point.

    @Pepijn

    Now I'd kinda like to see a company take an opposite approach to marketing such products and do better with it.

    Imagine trail cameras with names like "Fluffy Bunny Flix 5000" or "Oh Deer".

    @Pepijn macho naming is very amusing. I saw a car towing a caravan called "the buccaneer" last week.

    More usefully I bought a cheapie wildlife night vision camera to spy on the badgers in our garden last year

    Deliberately picked one with a good old fashioned pull out the SD card to retrieve design. The video is amazingly good, I expected it to be rubbish. I can share a bit of badger action as a sample if useful.

    This one -> £39.

    @Walrus @Pepijn hope it works well for you. He's not suspicious of the camera at all. Smart badger.

    @lvl3k @eff he's a chunky boi.

    He digs little latrines (like a Roman army). He rounds up all the sweet chestnuts from the trees and has a little buffet (possibly not like the Roman army). Also digs big holes and eats larva from wasps nests. (Almost certainly not like the Roman army).

    On the downside our bees now have an electric fence round their hives.

    @Walrus @markn @Pepijn it's such a great gift! Ours (non wifi-sd card one) has shown us a pine marten, barn and church owl, hedgehogs, inquisitive tits, a fox scaring our runner ducks in their coop, moorhens, a family of magpies learning to work together to chase a cat and loads of wild ducks. We love it!

    @Pepijn@mastodon.online It's just a matter of time before some marketroid has the genius idea of marketing wildlife cameras for women. None of that tactical nonsense, just 50 shades of PINK

    @Pepijn that's an interesting point. I didn't realise they were named like that. Maybe they're trying to add the survivalist/prepper/nutjob hard rightist market. They just need to add tactical to the name and they'll clean up.

    @Pepijn they just know their audience. The vast majority is gonna be North American guys who drive pointlessly huge (and then idiotically lifted) pickup trucks and wear "mossy oak" camo everywhere, year round. This kind of naming is basically catnip for this crowd.

    They're all this guy, but for real:

    @Chancerubbage @Pepijn @cainmark not totally ironic - some revolutionaries LOVED that garb, and some hunters etc of course...people usually had a reason for it. Even if it was an armed revolution that wasn't happening!

    Now I can't wear my camo stuff cos as you say, people assume your politics is right-wing or pro-army. I just like to wild camp and not be seen? But I can't wear that gear outside of that now...

    @radioclash @Pepijn @cainmark

    Oh sure, not totally ironic at all. But the point was, it was not politically or culturally charged. It wasn’t worn by people who said things like ‘Why do you hate America so much’. Displaying a flag wasn’t about, ‘Why aren’t YOU displaying a flag?’ I wore army boots for a decade- great boots!) Camo, or army surplus were not about stealing valor, or cosplaying patriotism. It was merely just fine and free behavior, even practical.

    @Chancerubbage @Pepijn @cainmark yes I still have my army packs - my old OA and a day pack. Bombproof!

    It's very true wearing army gear in the 70's-90's usually meant you were poor or wanted very durable (but heavier) gear. Standard squatter/radical/student wear!

    I have a Royal Navy jacket, it's amazing - a form of Goretex and really keeps you dry. One problem: it's dark blue with reflective strips...ignorant people assume you're a cop in it! Quite silly as it's got a hood - cops always wear their helmets/caps in the UK, so their jackets never have hoods.

    I think they are trying to justify prices on the level of defense hardware, else they might have to slash their earnings by 70%.

    War and cruelty have been allowed to define masculinity, and the assumption is men buy these products for hunting. Maybe men should do something about that.

    @Pepijn luckily there are not many small South American island nations; only two UK territories, unless you count Trinidad and Tobago :)

    @Pepijn ahh what I call the 'Tactical Tax', a bit like the Pink Tax for stupid men.

    Slap some camo and tactical naming on any old shit, up the price and clueless wannabe preppers buy it in droves.

    Where actually usually you can get the same stuff cheaper without all the TA/army LARPing elsewhere.

    See also 'photography' - exactly the same stuff, but as soon as it becomes 'for photography' it magically adds an extra 0.

    @Pepijn Also 260 Euros for a TRAIL CAM? Does it bring the animal to you and wipe your bottom?

    Very overpriced. It's always rebranded Aliexpress stuff anyway, Prepper stores are maven for doing some lazy dropshipping with massive markups. A quick trip to eBay or Temu/Aliexpress usually works out better.

    Or making your own, a ESP32 or Pi with camera module used to work pretty well with nightvision, and I am sure you can get better IR lamps and modules now. I made my own CCTV once.
