My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today.

Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man. Just last month, on Sept. 14, he turned 90, on the same day Brad and I celebrated our 18th wedding anniversary. I will always treasure that he and I shared that date.

Walter was more than Chekov. He was a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man, and a loyal friend. To the fans who loved him for so many years, thank you. He loved you too.

Rest well, my dear friend. Keep navigating a steady course.

If all the governments shutting down their servers for a PHP vulnerability, all the hosting companies and enterprises terrified by the vuln, would give $100k, heck only $50k a year to the PHP Foundation, things could look very differently. Go make your employer sponsor *today* https://thephp.foundation/sponsor/ #php #phpc @thephpf

"What I would like to see is to find a new model where people working on open-source would be awarded for their work and the hours and hours they put into it from the people who most benefit from their work. I would like companies to realize that this is exploitation. Any exploitation is not sustainable. And it will end up badly if this continues, because the people doing the open-source will stop being motivated to actually do anything in the end."

@ondrej made sure that clear message made it into mainstream media. <https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/2026/10/man-who-saved-internet-php-vulnerability/689123/?gift=nwn-guseqS6cY1kVeEKZAV4eM30ZQanhnWOnf22yy-c>

Will the CTOs whose products depend on #curl or #php or #ffmpeg actually care? Is there an alternative model to #FOSS that isn't libertarian, individualistic, and exploitative?

I suspect so much ideology hides inside the single word "companies" that the answer for now is no. But we can build new collectives that acknowledge their debt to unseen labour, everything from washing the dishes and listening to stressed colleagues, through managing toxic masculinity, all the way to maintaining the code.

A reminder of things to change between now and Nov 3:

(Just so I don't confuse anyone into thinking daylight savings changes this weekend, it's next weekend. Extra hour of Halloween party! )

In most of the United States, daylight saving time ends on Sunday, November 1, 2026, when clocks turn back from 2 a.m. to 1 a.m. local time.

Despite massive investments and widespread hype around artificial intelligence, the technology has delivered zero financial payoff to corporate America outside of tech. Revenue per worker is rising for the Mag 7 but is flat for the S&P 493. And there are still no signs of AI boosting productivity growth https://www.apollo.com/wealth/insights-news/insights/daily-spark/no-signs-of-ai-payoff-outside-the-tech-sector i can’t wait to see how this all goes down between wars, inflation, job losses and AI. The stick is very, very simple. Ban the collection, use and resale of cross-site behavioral tracking for advertising purposes. GDPR has teeth, if we just enforce it.

That one change, and Meta, TikTok and Google lose all their traffic leverage. Of course that's precisely why lobbyists want to ensure politicians think it is impossible to enforce.

"After years of fighting for better pay and benefits, the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders have unionized.

The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders Association announced Friday that the team has voluntarily recognized the cheerleaders as a collective bargaining unit following a “meaningful discussion.” That gives the newly formed union a green light to begin negotiating. If successful, they would be the first NFL cheer squad to reach a contract.

@thanetric If you read the PHP Foundation's version of events, you'll find that the problem has been known about for years, but not considered a problem because exploiting the flaw is, and remains, extremely difficult.

An attacker would need to send several carefully crafted requests, to a server which doesn't use standard memory allocation protections, and without any other process writing to the target memory in between.

The problem of memory allocation and freeing is quite common in C programs in general, not just the PHP interpreter.
