I vote we rename the eMudhra intermediate certificate incident to “amuse bouche compromise.”

#biketooter #audax #rrty 12 of a possible 12 hurrah!

RRtY is an award for completing one 200km (or longer) ride in each consecutive month of a year.

That's my third series, but the Audax website tells me I can't have a new sew on cloth badge till I've done 5. The feeling of mild jeopardy always increases on the last couple of rides in a series.

Today's loop felt more like June than October in the afternoon sun.

A nice non dramatic way to finish riding the first DiY loop I ever plotted & possibly still one of the nicest.

Hops, vineyards, very moneyed horseracing studs below Newmarket and a homebound leg North across the fen past Ely cathedral.

The cycle "paths" from Wicken to Ely are sorta disintegrating back into the earth. So that bit is quite gravelly nowadays.

The livery of the new Airbus A350F freighter is a work of art. The joint winners of the design competition in 2022 were graphic designer John Feehan from Dublin and Canadian brothers Quinnten and Ellisten Iversen, then aged 16 and 12.

I was making potato and leek soup and the recipe asked for five potatoes cubed.

Even for potato soup, 125 potatoes seems a little excessive...

Well, these illustrations are delightful.

Sad that H isn't with them now.

#plumbing my replacement hot water cylinder expansion vessel has arrived.

I am seriously considering turning the old one into a fake mini nuke.

Enjoying the instruction manual troubleshooting section.

Problem: the vessel is not properly fastened.
Solution: check the vessel is fastened.

#wordoftheday is Tundish.

Relating to barrel & dish. In this case, it's that thing in your plumbing overflow that allows visibility of a leak via an air gap.

Brought to my attention by Anglian water who sent me a letter suggesting we have a leak. Took a while to find it cause it was an engineering problem with conflicting bits of evidence: a) we use water all night b) we don't (when we're away from home).

The answer being that we turn off the hot water when we're away from home and it's the unvented system expansion vessel that has the fault.

I love a potential happy ending (i e. not digging up metres of garden and water supply pipe). Am awaiting my new vessel.

Originally we planned to do this work on Saturday. With that initiating #InfrastructureAwarenessSaturday where every so often we'll fix a minor issue on #infrastructure we use in our daily life.

As the weather cooperated, today the path had a nice puddle that would be satisfying to see drain. Naturally our Site Safety Plan was ready & checked by H&S.

So we moved the works to today. After we set up perimeter security we dug the trench. It went well (we ignore the sliced worm).

Bikepacking in Central Japan

I haven’t been bikepacking for a few years now. The bike still gets ridden, but the long trips have stopped. But the old urge is still there and my bikepacking gear remains stored away next to my bikes, ready to be dusted off sometime.

That desire to revisit those days gave me the idea of pulling all the rides into one place. Every route I’ve ridden and photographed. The Japan Alps, the Kiso Valley, the Kii coast, and further out. Shimanami Kaido. Lake Biwa. The Noto Peninsula. The gear I used and what I learned about sleeping in bus shelters (arrive late, leave early).

If you’re interested in bikepacking in central Japan, it might be of use. You can find the new page here.

Is it all just a goddamned game to these people?

$12,930,300,000 = $🤗00,000

WTF?

BBC News...

Kent Police has issued a statement following the disruption in Dover earlier today.

It says officers "responded to a spontaneous protest" during Saturday morning, adding "no arrests were made".

I think we have our answer. Old ladies are dangerous terrorists trying to harm the nation. These are just lads on a day out getting a bit rowdy.

Mini UK South Coast #BikeTooter tour Day5.

Best weather of the trip.

Quick ride to Ryde (IOW) and down the pier to catch the catamaran back to the mainland.

Portsmouth was interesting, great views as the ferry docked. The cycling onwards via Chichester and Bognor was fairly grim. Bit of a joke to call it part of a national cycle route - no photos taken of that bit. Won't be back to that bit.

Littlehampton onwards towards Brighton much more pleasant, had a nice long sit by the sea to decompress.

Probably the last day, unless I develop surprise enthusiasm for Brighton to London by bike rather than train.

Mini UK South Coast #BikeTooter tour Day4. Bournemouth to Lymington for the IOW ferry. Then Yarmouth to Cowes & Newport (where the sun finally came out) via a circuitous route

There's always something fun about taking a bike on a ferry. Especially to somewhere you've never been before.

Saw my first ever red squirrel on the eponymous Red Squirrel Trail.

Mini UK South Coast #BikeTooter tour Day3. Weymouth to Bournemouth.

Easy day today. Only the one real climb, back out of Weymouth and it's stayed dry. Surprise (mainly cause I didn't study the map) but fun bits of mild off-road over heathland to the Sandbanks chain ferry. Then an easy flat trundle on the prom to Bournemouth. I'm afraid Bournemouth beach is definitely outclassing Sunny Hunny.

Mini UK South Coast #BikeTooter tour Day2. Exeter to Weymouth.

Lots of rain, wind & hills. Lots of opportunities to regret all that cheese I've eaten since last September!

Fantastic views at sea level. The Hardy monument wasn't visible from the Hardy monument car park today. Otherwise I imagine the views from the tops would have been splendid too. Hopefully better weather tomorrow.

Best event of the day. Open Reach closing the road to install fibre internet to the village of Uploders. Class.

Travel drama. We've been halted at Taunton for a while "due to a disruptive passenger".

The police have just arrived & removed him to the platform where he's making shapes.

Amusingly various people in the carriage waved as the train left without him. I wonder if he's now scored himself alternative accommodation for the evening.

That's enough excitement for one day
