Apparently, my daughter was given an assignment to use generative #AI to create a poster / cover for A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court in her English class. She took offense to this and asked if she could just do the assignment by hand or digitally using one of her #art apps. She was told no. So, my daughter decided to take a stand and not do the assignment. We support her decision completely. Asking someone who lives for creating her own art to use AI and refusing to accept anything else is inexcusable.

She came home with an email update.
"Also, I know that some of you are opposed to using #AI and I want you to know that I respect that. I care about the environment and would not ask you to use something that is incredibly detrimental to our planet." Between several different classes, "we are using about 5-6 gallons of water total for this assignment."

The teacher then proceeds to say that if the student still does not want to do the assignment, then they will deduct five points and require them to write a few paragraphs about what they would put on the cover. They explicitly stated that any artwork done by hand was unacceptable.

My daughter does not want me to pursue this on her behalf. I think docking any points is bogus.

@dr_a @JessicaAnnEng @0x00string With the teacher expressing the environmental concerns of AI, she may be under pressure to “get students to use AI”. I know the pressure on those of us in higher education is considerable.

@aprilfollies @JessicaAnnEng @0x00string the pressure is distressingly real, and a recent addition to the list of reasons i’m glad i’m not in higher ed anymore.

If there’s an obligation to force the use of AI for the sake of using AI then the students are hopefully learning a valuable lesson about the foolishness of authority.

Those with their hands on the levers instinctively know that they need to get blood on everyone’s hands so all are already compromised when the shit hits the fan.

I am a lowly sessional with one course in an institution with enough other issues, but am grateful that the institution’s blanket policy is that use of AI constitutes plagiarism because sources cannot be properly attributed.

@JessicaAnnEng @0x00string This is quite disturbing, and great you're taking it up with the teacher. Any AI tools should be out of classes at least until children are old enough to know how terrible they can be. Glad your daughter also is standing up to this.

@JessicaAnnEng @0x00string It may be out of concern that using AI will be unavoidable and students should a acquire some basic proficiency using it. That is the charitable assumption. The teacher may even be in inner conflict with it myself, but bow to superior authority, and your daughter may know or sense that.

Don't get me wrong, I am all for not using AI. But the considerations may be complex for both your daughter and her teacher.

@humanhorseshoes it gets better. Remember, all of this is second hand information right now. Apparently her teacher mentioned that this particular AI service only used a minute amount of water. That made it worse.

@JessicaAnnEng Your daughter's a badass. The point of homework/assignments _should_ be to exercise students' brains; your daughter exercised her brain more by pushing back on this absurdity, than anyone would have by doing the assignment as stated.

@kgf I completely agree. That's why they go to school, to learn. Expand and exercise those minds. How can the students be graded on an assignment when they are not even allowed to have direct involvement in completing the assignment?

@JessicaAnnEng I would tell her to do it by hand anyways and just pretend it's done by AI. AI is the epitome of "bullshit" in the sense of not-caring-for-truth, so why not embrace the philosophy?

@jfcaron @JessicaAnnEng I used this LLM I even trained myself on my own artwork, but I optimized the training process by skipping the whole lossy-compression creation of a model and shortcutted the output with the input!

What is even the point of this as an assignment?

It takes five seconds to type a prompt into an AI, you learn nothing, you gain nothing.

@adaliabooks @JessicaAnnEng I’ve seen schools justify it by saying they need to teach kids “the skills of the future.” Because unfortunately they’re caught between a rock and a hard place. The teacher may or may not believe in it, but they’re pushed by management, who in turn are pushed by parents who think their kids are missing out on a “modern education” and schools need to “get with the times”. It’s bad whichever way you look at it.

Unless your daughter is in an MBA program that seems off to me. It’s the same as “go home and ask your guardian to do your homework tonight”.

@JessicaAnnEng Damn right it is. It stinks to high heaven. I'd write a few paragraphs about why the use of GenAI is wrong and then a couple of lines describing my idea for the cover. I'd go to the school Head and ask "what kind of bollocks is this?". But that's just me, a grumpy so and so.

@CaptMikeYates @JessicaAnnEng I mean at least here in germany schools are used for decades to turn kids into compliant little workers that don't question the system, and shut up and take whatever is dumped on them by those higher up in the hierarchy. so ai is just a mere new tool for that, and not something pushing in a new direction alltogether 😩

@JessicaAnnEng and all those estimates are from self reported data from the companies, which of course is going to be 100% accurate

I really think they love the water issue because it's the easiest to shoot down, though. What about gas generators running near people's homes? What about all the rare earth materials being mined to make GPU's that will only last 5-8 years? What about mass clearing land to build these things? Etc etc etc

I hate this for your kid :(

@nirak @JessicaAnnEng Very much this. The most common go-to rebuttal I hear re: the environmental concern is either one of two things:

    1. "Data centers use a closed loop system" (yet provide no reciepts re: how often this "uses less water" system is being used in existing (AI or non-AI) data centers. They also never address how the water in that loop is recooled nor address the fact that closed loop systems might add coolant chemicals to the water in that loop

    2. "You are against data centers.... why dont you go after golf courses, too."

Even knew someone who used both of these talking points in the same conversation.

@Catwoman69y2k @nirak @JessicaAnnEng The “closed loop” thing is technically true, but also irrelevant, because that’s not the water use people are talking about. Commodity servers mostly dump their heat into air. The air dumps its heat via exchanger into the closed-loop water (or various other refrigerants, but water is common). The closed-loop water dumps its heat via exchanger into the outside air. That takes a *LOT* of exchanger volume on the water-to-outside-air side. To increase efficiency, they use something like a swamp cooler for the outside air. *That* water is used once and evaporates.

Incidentally, this is also why “datacenters in space” is such a dumb idea.

@Catwoman69y2k @nirak @JessicaAnnEng It reminds me of the “Masks don’t work!” goons from a few years ago. They take one technically-correct aspect of the thing being discussed, and treat it as the only thing being discussed.

Like … sure, datacenters don’t *need to* use the pre-chillers for the outside air all the time, but in practice they do use them about 80% of the time, because they would need several times as much exchanger capacity without the pre-chilling. Especially in arid environments like New Mexico and Utah.

@bob_zim @nirak @JessicaAnnEng Very much agreed about the parallels with some of the COVID anti-maskers that were so proud of thier ignorance

When it comes to that 80%, I wonder how that compares since we got all this talk about "hyperscaling" . One big issue with alot of the techbros' "technological advances" is that they often want to scale things up way faster than what is reasonable. Sometimes they just assume they can scale up at a rate that isnt even physically and/or technologically possible. Common issue in people who have that amount of hubris driving thier thought processes.
