AI is a grift by oil producing nations to keep petrol as the dominant world currency by simply demanding more power than renewables can generate, example #1,263

Today's bread-cube is even better, and funnier. Difference is that it went into the oven just before it started escaping out the sides of the tin, so it's neater, and I decided to trust the bread would come out just fine on its own if I didn't spray the inside of the tin with oil, and that was fine too.

This one I'm going to let completely cool before touching it further. I'll go get a decent bread knife in the morning and I should be enjoying the perfect jaffle for lunch tomorrow.

UN votes to adopt new world map that shows Africa’s true scale

Togo-sponsored resolution called to phase out traditional map that depicts continent as similar size to Greenland

The United Nations has voted to adopt a resolution for the world to formally phase out the traditional Mercator map of the globe in favour of one that more accurately displays Africa’s size.

Only the US voted no.

proof·la·tion /pruːfˈleɪ.ʃən/

noun [neologism, philosophy of mathematics, computer science]

1. The rapid depreciation of the epistemic, academic, or reputational value of mathematical proofs caused by the automated, low-cost generation of formal proofs by artificial intelligence and automated theorem provers.

2. A condition in the mathematical community where the sheer volume of formally verified theorems exceeds the capacity for human comprehension, shifting the primary bottleneck of mathematics from establishing truth to extracting insight.

@randahl $366,000,000 on a net worth of $1T is basically the same as someone with a net worth of $1 million spending $366. It is nothing.
This is why the wealthy are so dangerous.

It says a lot that there's an AI ad of a mediocre white dude stealing the credit from a person of color and nobody can tell if it's satire because it's literally the truth.

No, opposing LLMs isn't "purity culture." I've seen this now from quite a few different people, and I disagree vehemently. It is good, actually, to have moral principles and hold to them, even when people with more money than you find said principles annoying.

One of many things that's irksome about "are LLMs conscious" discourse is that humans are by and large fucking awful at telling what is and isn't conscious.

People got vibesick over ELIZA for fuck's sake! A lot of people playing Portal got broken up over melting down the Weighted Companion Cube, which is categorically inert even in the plot of the game.

At the same time, a lot of folks reject the humanity of neurodiverse people or people of color. We plain suck at determining consciousness.

When I hear people say “I ship code that I don’t read,” what I hear in my head is “I really do not care about what the end-user of this product experiences, I do not care about whichever poor soul needs to maintain this thing after I’ve gotten bored with paying attention to it, I do not care about anybody on my team who has to support the ongoing operation of it, and frankly I didn’t even care about making it in the first place. I just wanted to be done for the sake of being done.”

@madengineering @ArtHarg @Nerde @VeroniqueB99 back in the 2000s it was fashionable to train a Markov model on a bunch of text and connect it to an IRC bot. if you got two or more of them in the same channel, they'd very quickly focus in on the shared commonalities of their input data and end up spitting out stuff like lionz, hi, hi lionz, lionz, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, poop, poop, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, for the rest of their existence.
