    every single person i know who switched to linux

    - likes it more then windows
    - has one baffling bug that makes no sense they have no idea how to fix and cannot find info about online (partially cause of the death of google search)

    and yes, this includes me

    you WILL find love again and it will only come at the cost of going "wait why does my window resize every time i alt tab?? that's so annoying. but like, within acceptable ranges annoying. ugh" or something like that.

    mine is "firefox stops having buttons in the top bar work after a time"

    @junebug Mine is some bug in the compositor and/or AMD GPU driver that causes miniature views and tooltips to go blank sometimes, and the only way to fix it is to restart X11. It only happens after the system has gone without reboot for a couple of weeks (it's always running because it's on the PC which doubles as a small server).

    @junebug only on some of my systems the chipset audio does not work. On the actual installed OS. On the live usb-stick for the same distro's installer the audio does work. Tried looking it up for a bit, then simply plugged my headphones into a cheap USB audio adapter and moved on. But I've been Linux (and a teensy bit BSD for one box, I should run that again) since the early 00s. So, yeah, pattern holds.

    @junebug Me too. Well, the one bug I can't fix, anyway (file sharing between Linux and Windows). In consequence of which I haven't been able to use Linux on the desktop - the machine hasn't been switched on for months now - so don't know whether I like it more than Windows.

    Could be the Windows are not using high enough level security. By default SAMBA lower levels of MS security are disabled.
    Or DNS. Add name & IP of Linux server to the Windows host file.

    @raymaccarthy @junebug Two problems:

    (1) The Mint GUI does not seem to know about the Windows share. The Windows share *is* more generally readable by Linux boxes because I have a Raspberry Pi that has no trouble accessing it.

    (2) [deleted: I was confused by something else]

    @raymaccarthy @junebug Note that this is an experiment in whether I can replace Windows by Linux on the desktop for non-techie household members, so any solutions requiring command line or editing of config files are out. (I do have decades of driving Linux on the server using such things, but that's not the point of this exercise.)

    @TimWardCam @junebug
    Add the Placebar GUI Widget: "Connect to a remote computer or shared disk". The icon is an Earth globe.

    It adds a bookmark to caja Filemanager.
    I use it to connect to real Windows Shares, or Samba.

    I thought you were trying to connect a Windows to a Linux share.

    Windows was never 100% GUI. Sometime on it you have to use a console command.
    The Net command creating a local account!

    @TimWardCam @junebug
    Then using GUI Software Manager I added grsync, a GUI to rsync.
    Once the bookmark in caja is clicked, then Grsync can be used to sync files with share. Much easier than rsync in the console.
    Remember the trailing / on the source or it creates an extra level.

    @eestileib @junebug oh, my distro works great on these computers, but hangs indefinitely on shutdown on the kiddo’s laptop. Could I debug that? Maybe. They run Debian and it doesn’t hang on shutdown, for them, on that laptop.

    @ausvak if you wanna play big name multiplayer games like cod or whatever you're shit outta luck. if you don't play that, use any big name non-arch distro. i'm on debian

    @junebug @ausvak yeah Steam has done a lot of work over the past 5-10 years increasing compatibility for linux users, so there aren't that many games I simply can't play on Linux Mint (which is Ubuntu under the hood). Occasionally there are still minor tweaks involved but nothing like it used to be.

    @junebug Some folks have already taken this as a prompt so:
    There's a chance when I swap my audio output to HDMI I get a noisy echo of the signal.
    Which is solved by starting or restarting Discord, somehow.

    Most people that I know have more than one baffling bug, to be honest.
    I don't know what this fact has to do with Linux or Windows, however. 🤔

    @junebug Every once in a while when I unplug an HDMI cable the entire session crashes, particularly great when it happens in meetings or when giving talks and fiddling with the non-working beamer. It happens less when the HDMI is connected thrue a USB-C Adapter, but not never. Its been with me for years, no idea how to fix it. You learn to life with it, I barely get upset anymore.

    @junebug I run several different desktop distros and I sync Firefox. I have auto-hiding, vertical tabs. Except, sometimes the tabs don't hide until I toggle the hide tabs button. Doesn't happen when I try to screen-capture it for a bug report.

    Mine was "my WiFi card causes my CPU to detect voltage spikes that aren't there when it tries to sleep" but I actually found out how to fix it by deep diving into the ArchWiki for something entirely unrelated so now I don't think I have any. For now.

    @junebug Several. But the last one nuked the boot drive so had to start again with a Win10 install, as that was the original OS and then upgrade to Win11.

    Plucking up the courage to install Mint again. Never got Logitech devices to work properly and Blender crashed constantly. Not a great first Linux experience if I'm honest.

    I can’t automount on boot my NAS with part of my Steam library or Steam spins at the loading user data screen and never opens.

    I have to boot, turn on Steam, and then mount the NAS.

    @junebug I had one mystery bug where some apps _sometimes_ crashed with no apparent reason and longer Rust compiles crashed midway, but completed if restarted a few times. Turned out one of the two 16 gig RAM sticks had developed a fault so the problems started when enough memory was used to start reserving the faulty area. Pretty much the last thing I checked.

    New stick in and it's been rock solid since.
