@joachim I tested and used for a few code translating tasks for which AI was useful, ye, but this amounts to less than 1% of my work. The quintessential dependence on AI in several fields and in science is a big hoax, but of course we can also make it a self fulfilling profecy if we just relax

@bms conversely (removed others so as not to jump into mentions of strangers): there's a limited amount of mental bandwidth to devote to thinking about things as a group; offloading/delegating items so that one does not have think about them anymore, and can preserve that mental capacity for other preferred/important items, is something that long predates AI.
e.g., one of the reasons I pay my kids a weekly salary to do certain chores is not because I don't want to do the work, it's because I don't want to have to think about it.

@joachim I was a programmer for over 10 years and a teacher for over 5 years before LLMs and I would still be a programmer and teacher if LLMs disappeared tomorrow. Actually, if LLMs disappeared tomorrow, I would enjoy my work even more.

@joachim As a domain expert in a tech-centric career, we need human domain experts, and AI will impede making them.
Current AI is absolutely incapable of novel conceptualization. I know there are folks that disagree, but it's because AI can express concepts it has learned that the human has not. But AI can only express learned concepts.
This can be useful. But also sometimes a problem needs an actually creative and novel solution. AI can't do that. And neither can a human that depends on it.
