I wonder if Slate is more of a vanguard than people think?

Unlike Ford (and other auto makers) the Slate will have far less memory, GPU, disk or other items that are in serious short supply right now because of the multi-trillion dollar boondoggle. It also means that there's less tech to generally enshittify and get wrong because folk no longer understand what they're creating.

I wonder if we'll see a return to "just a car / refrigerator / dish-washer  / toaster / etc."?

There was no debate on whether Morris intentionally set his worm loose; the legal debate (see 928 F.2d 504 (1991)) was about whether the statute required an intent to cause harm. He did not (and I had the evidence for that and alerted his defense team) , but the trial court ruled and the 2nd Circuit upheld that intent to cause harm was not necessary. Here, the question is whether OpenAI intended to create and loose an Internet hacking tool.
Tort liability, however, is another matter. As Keeton et al put it, "The standard of conduct imposed by the law is an external one, based upon what society demands generally of its members, rather than upon the actor’s personal morality or individual sense of right and wrong. A failure to conform to the standard is negligence, therefore, even if it is due to clumsiness, stupidity, forgetfulness, an excitable temperament, or even sheer ignorance. An honest blunder, or a mistaken belief that no damage will result, may absolve the actor from moral blame, but the harm to others is still as great, and the actor’s individual standards must give way in this area of the law to those of the public. In other words, society may require of a person not to be awkward or a fool."
