Nov 4, 2026, 11:08 AMAmericans, if you wonder how the other countries feel about this, the European side of my family is cold-texting me congratulations like I graduated or something

Nov 4, 2026, 11:36 AM@0xabad1dea Really, though, this is the Masters Degree, and the Presidential one will be the ‘Defending your PhD’ elections (the ones that really count).
Nov 4, 2026, 11:53 AM@0xabad1dea I'm experiencing the same from overseas family and friends!

Nov 4, 2026, 12:37 PM@0xabad1dea lol, something similar happened to me in april after hungarian elections
Nov 4, 2026, 12:44 PM@0xabad1dea like many acquaintances (ex: dad of kid my son goes to school with) who know I'm Brazilian were congratulating me for Lula's victory.
Made me realize that, yeah, it was a big deal. And we need any and all wins we can get these days.
Funny thing, they all assumed I was pro-Lula. I took it as an endorsement of being, if not good, at least a decent person.
BTW, gefeliciteerd!!!
Paul Schoepaulschoe@mastodon.worldNov 5, 2026, 11:24 AMI was relieved by the outcome of the Brazilian elections, but some Brazilian friends here in Europe told me before the elections that it was a choice between being bitten by the cat or the dog.

aphantastic :blobtonguewink:aphantastic@vivaldi.netNov 4, 2026, 1:52 PMSorry for the brainless question, what does "cold-texting" mean here?
- abadidea0xabad1dea@infosec.exchangeNov 4, 2026, 2:15 PM
@aphantastic like cold-calling: texting out of the blue, I did not message them first and there was no ongoing conversation with them about the subject

Thank you very much for explaining.

Nov 4, 2026, 3:09 PM@0xabad1dea Sorry: NOT "Americans", whatever you want to be called is OK. USians maybe? We will oblige.
However, we are hundreds of millions American not voting in the US, but living in the continent.
It's part of the backyard thing of the Monroe doctrine that most of us actively despise.
Congrats for the blue wave though.- abadidea0xabad1dea@infosec.exchangeNov 4, 2026, 3:16 PM
@dacig Tell you what, I'll cut you a deal. I promise to never dickishly swan into your country and tell you what you're allowed to call your own nationality in your own native language like some sort of colonialist missionary who doesn't know how cultural context works, and you do the same for everyone else. Deal?

StoneBear 🎃 :potion_genderqueer:stonebear2@hachyderm.ioNov 4, 2026, 3:38 PM@0xabad1dea I didn't get cold-texted by anybody without a blue passport, but I did get semi-cold-texted by a fellow expat... and the fact that a bunch of us here were rejoicing made enough noise to make NL Times, which I thought was fun.
*chuckles* I remember a tale in 2008 when Obama got in, somebody on a train in central Europe got clocked for American by a pretty girl and she just walked up and kissed him...
It seems throwing the fash out is kind of a big deal, no matter which one it is. On the one hand, hey, we were just doing our bit; on the other, yeah. How _well_ we did it is kind of a big deal. I may have to order an adult beverage about it. 🍾
Leaf Greenleafgreen@mastodon.socialNov 4, 2026, 4:21 PM@0xabad1dea same! My Hungarian friend is so tickled for us, which given that country's history of full-tilt run into the dark side with a recent swing back to sanity is particularly poignant ✨

As a European, I don't dare to cold-send congratulations to people I work with. I just raise the elections during conversations
Over 40% of voters have decided to continue on the path that the USA was on.
