Stepping away from the desk to catch some midday sun – Hamburg showing off its finest autumn colors around the Alster today. Crisp air, bright blue skies, and golden canopies at every turn. Exactly what a lunch break is made for. 🍂☀️

Jimmy Kimmel didn’t hold back breaking down the midterm results – from Trump deflecting blame and talking ballroom marble to the White House lashing right back at the show. Complete comedic catharsis.

Huge congratulations to Democrats on securing the midterms! 🌊

What an achievement. It might not reshape the political landscape overnight, but shifting power is always about moving the needle step-by-step. A critical check, renewed momentum, and a decisive move in the right direction.

Hats off to every voter, volunteer, and organizer who put in the work. 🗳️✨

35 years ago, my dad chose an Intel 80386 over a typewriter – and sparked a lifelong obsession.

With 1 MB RAM, a 40 MB hard drive, and a color CRT monitor, I was completely hooked. Within weeks, I had figured out COM1 vs. LPT1 and was obsessively tweaking autoexec.bat and config.sys for expanded memory. While friends played on C64s and Ataris, this was my true beginning in tech.

25 years ago – on November 1st – I put out my last cigarette and never looked back. 🚬

Before that milestone, I smoked an average of a pack a day for over nine years. Walking away for good remains one of the absolute best decisions I’ve ever made, and I know with certainty that I will never start again.

Here’s to a quarter-century of breathing easy and staying smoke-free.

Another architectural decision for the portfolio: going all-in on AVIF.

Now that all major browsers have full support, there is little reason to look back. It delivers identical visual quality at a fraction of the file size compared to legacy formats. JPEG definitely had an iconic run – and might still pop up in edge cases – but for modern web delivery, its era has finally passed. 📸⚡

Update on the photo portfolio rebuild: rewrote the entire ingestion pipeline – a local script now selects, downscales photos, geocodes and aggregates all photo metadata. Everything syncs to a GCS bucket and will feed directly into static page generation.

On the Astro side, I’ve mostly been tinkering with basic markup to get an intuitive feel for how it handles things. Nothing complex yet – taking it step by step. 🚀

How do a few basic connections give rise to decision-making, memory, and thought?

Aatish Bhatia’s interactive essay "Let’s Build a Brain" shows how intelligence emerges from the ground up – starting with simple logic gates and evolving into complex neural behaviors. Seeing the wiring in action makes computational neuroscience click in an entirely new way.

@dansup I think I found a bug. Someone quoted a post of mine. When I click the notifications, the post I see doesn't include my post. Slightly confusing.

Tired of deciphering flat paper assembly booklets? Bygga turns IKEA manuals into clear, interactive 3D models – zoom, rotate, and see every part from any angle before you screw it together. No more guesswork or backwards panels.

While rebuilding my photo portfolio in Astro, I fell into a rabbit hole: how do you give photos short, clean web links without any two ever clashing? 📸

Turns out, a 10-character ID seems safe until probability kicks in – at 100k photos, the chance of a duplicate is 1 in 188.

By hashing the filename and timestamp into 16 lowercase letters, the odds of a duplicate drop to 1 in 16 trillion (40,000× rarer than winning the lottery).

Completely over-engineered, but bulletproof forever. ✨

@dansup Is an automatic light/dark mode on the roadmap for Columnly? Another thing to consider are hearts instead of stars, like Mastodon introduced in the 5.0 redesign.
