Thanks! A shame you can't join us. It will be an interesting experience. To me, this film is still what science fiction "looks" like. To some of my book club members (I believe I am the oldest one), it is simply out of date. A few of them did not recognize pictures of Robbie.
We are the last of our kind, aren't we?

As for the last of our kind, I take comfort in believing we got to live through Science Fiction's golden age. Not many can say that.

We came in on its tail end, but close enough that classics from the '50s (even the '40s) were still considered core material for us as fans. Today, much of that has faded like the color of my hair. "The Caves of Steel" is still a good story, but I think it comes to very few minds these days when sf is mentioned. "Ringworld" might still do that.
"Amazing Stories" began publication in 1926. So, yeah, we lived long enough to see sf rise and fall.

Janice in GAArchergal@wandering.shopAug 9, 2026, 7:04 PM@Professor_Stevens I think the first time I saw that movie was on the Saturday Night at the Movies show on TV when I was a kid. I LOVED it. That scene with the ray guns outlining the monster that was roaring impressed me very very much.
I think I might have seen it in a theater revival maybe in the late 70s? I'm another old SF fan.

That's a great moment, dramatically and conceptually. It's the only time they "see" what they think they're up against, and having it only visible in the emissions of their pistols was visionary sf film-making. Alas, I think it's actually the weakest vfx in the film, because it is recognizably stop-motion. The scene that impressed me the most was this one.

@Professor_Stevens You're absolutely correct! Young me loved the monster, even though on later viewings it was obviously animated. Somewhat older me was in absolute awe of the scale of the building by the Krell.
