    That's a great moment, dramatically and conceptually. It's the only time they "see" what they think they're up against, and having it only visible in the emissions of their pistols was visionary sf film-making. Alas, I think it's actually the weakest vfx in the film, because it is recognizably stop-motion. The scene that impressed me the most was this one.

    Three men on a futuristic platform, looking down into an abyss. The one on the right is thinking, "Wow, this water's deep."

    @Professor_Stevens You're absolutely correct! Young me loved the monster, even though on later viewings it was obviously animated. Somewhat older me was in absolute awe of the scale of the building by the Krell.
