    What we’re up against in the U.S. during this election.

    Yesterday:

    1. Meta closed the No Kings accounts on the day of the protest. Restored them later, saying “our bad.” But did not restore admin privileges.

    2. We learned that millions of people had no idea about the protests because Meta suppressed posts about it.

    3. Bluesky closed the @DemocracyMattersALot account for “unusual activity.” (No idea if it has been restored.)

    And for months we’ve been watching the fascists do everything in their power to restrict voting rights.

    The billionaires know they’re the minority. Not economically (which is obvious) but ethically. Otherwise they wouldn’t be working so hard to stop democracy.

    I wanna believe most Americans are good people. We’re fighting for what’s right. But our enemy has massive resources and control. That what we need to quell.

    Keep fighting. Stay vigilant. And for fuck’s sake, vote!

    @markwyner Bluesky was fun for a bit. My art and music did better there than on Mastodon for a few months, then last September it was just like the others: no interactions, increased bot and AI posts, etc. Now, I see a TON or rape apologists since the Cornell story broke. It's become a cesspool.

    @earwigplanet I didn’t know that. I know I created an account to test the waters a long while back. It didn’t take me long to shut it down. I kept one post to point to Mastodon and talk shit about them.

    @markwyner

    i joined social media on #bluesky after the election to be part of the #Resistance against this fascist regime. after being kicked off for celebrating the death of a racist, fascist bigot, i decided #bsky is less the home of the resistance than a refuge for appeasers (certainly compared to #Mastodon)

    but they're nowhere close to the fascists at #Meta (those of you on #threads & #instagram)

    but i 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘭𝘺 disagree that "most Americans are good people." that fantasy died Nov 5, 2024

    @WorldTravelerAll7 @markwyner All those MAGA meatheads with the Trump flags on their jacked up trucks we used to see in the South are presumed camouflaged not reformed.

    They took the flags off their trucks after all those torture and murder cases by ICE made the news. I figure this is NOT because they no longer support Trump and ICE but rather so their ($$$) jacked-up trucks don't get trashed while they are in the grocery store.

    If the GOP loses this election by a cheat-proof margin, expect to see these MAGA thugs put their Stormtrumper uniforms back on and show up in DC and elsewhere demanding that the election results be thrown out. This could easily be a repeat of Nov 14 and Dec 12 2020 in DC.

    Again like those two brutal battles, this would be a warmup for a bunch of fash gathering at the US Capitol, this time to reinforce the GOP inside refusing to seat incoming Dems.

    @WorldTravelerAll7 I’m glad you mentioned this. I had intended to type “I wanna believe.” But I hastily wrote my post. 🤦🏻‍♂️

    America has a history of absolute fuckery. One that remains strong. And many Americans either support that outright, or enable it with a lack of participation in the fight. Participation meaning protesting, voting, guiding the weak minded, or anything else that helps.

    America is faulty and Americans are to blame. But there are so many of us who are good people.

    In any case, you are correct. And I concur.

    @markwyner i hear ya. i want to believe that, too, but my hope in the American people drained out of me while i was working the polls on election day

    but since we can't just remove maga from our country & humanity, i strive to remove them from my life, & limit my interactions to only us good💙people in my #magafree 💙world 😊

    & to your point about those on the sidelines, they need to learn that appeasing fascists is not an acceptable path

    @WorldTravelerAll7 if we’re kind to each other and fight together, we could be unstoppable. Even against an enemy who is so stacked with wealth and power. ✊🏻

    And, yes, Elie Wiesel’s famous quote is ringing so true: “We must take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim.”

    @markwyner I know I’m supplying a tech answer to a legal/ethical question, but **own your own platform.**

    Socials are moderately acceptable for getting news out but terrible for everything else. If you can’t truly self-host (most can’t feasibly!) use a smaller local webhost, maybe even distributed across multiple hosts perhaps across countries. The smaller hosts value your $25 a month much more than the big tech companies.

    Keep posted content legal and consider socials a disposable way to spread news, not the core. I think the Alt. National Parks people have some clever people doing this for them.

    @markwyner “We must make our choice. We may have democracy, or we may have wealth concentrated in the hands of a few, but we cannot have both.”

    @markwyner
    If your vote wasn't important, Musk wouldn't already have spent almost $400-million on the US midterm elections to shout it down.
    By the time all his political donations are counted, Musk will likely have spent nearly half a billion dollars to advance fascism in the US.

    @markwyner They're busy, that's for sure. In California, they have two propositions on the ballot to derail a proposition to vote in a 5% tax on BILLIONaires.

    If either one of those ringers pass, the Billionaire Tax is rescinded. Currently YouTube is being pounded by ads for one of them claiming it would stop plans by legislators to tax Californians' 401Ks.

    Imagine voting for a big money tax meant to generate funding to replace money lost to the One Big Beautiful Bill then, two items down the ballot, unwittingly voting to cancel it.

    That's what we're up against.

    @markwyner @DemocracyMattersALot

    I was a volunteer worker at a No Kings event, there to remind people who brought a ballot to sign and date it. But more than half had already voted. The #VoteEarly message is being heeded.

    @markwyner @DemocracyMattersALot I’m shocked Bluesky closed that account. I’ve always had a really bad feeling about them. So glad I just decided to join Mastodon. Oh and Meta is totally compromised. Just look at how they're handling Brazil. It's only going to get worse.

    @markwyner @DemocracyMattersALot It’s almost as if using tools your enemies control means they can shut you down anytime they want.

    This implies the Democrats are the enemies of the oligarchs… which is factually inaccurate except that the Dems still think the oligarchs are their friends…

    @markwyner @DemocracyMattersALot on the one hand it feels like like preaching to the choir to be posting here on mastodon, but on the other hand, I don’t want to put any energy or content onto those networks that are already captured.

    @markwyner @DemocracyMattersALot About 1/3 of America is good people. About 1/3 is bad people. The remainder are exhausted from treading water in capitalist work camps for 46 years or longer, and can't be assessed until they have rested.

    @markwyner @DemocracyMattersALot

    Billionaires in California are spending over $1 million a day to dissuade voters from implementing a minuscule 3% tax on them. They should be grateful all California is asking for is 3%. If it were up to me, their heads would be on sticks.
