Talk to your friends.
Talk to dog pals in the dog park.
Talk to neighbours you feel safe with.
If you find MAGA save your time and move on.
Spend your time talking to rational people.
Make sure they have checked their voter registration.
Check in and encourage them to vote.
Repeat as needed.

#Police @RadicalGraffiti

They murder in France even teenagers.
They murder in USA even when a father carries a toddler in the car.

#PoliceKills and butchers, this is their job !

@markwyner They're busy, that's for sure. In California, they have two propositions on the ballot to derail a proposition to vote in a 5% tax on BILLIONaires.

If either one of those ringers pass, the Billionaire Tax is rescinded. Currently YouTube is being pounded by ads for one of them claiming it would stop plans by legislators to tax Californians' 401Ks.

Imagine voting for a big money tax meant to generate funding to replace money lost to the One Big Beautiful Bill then, two items down the ballot, unwittingly voting to cancel it.

That's what we're up against.

What we’re up against in the U.S. during this election.

Yesterday:

1. Meta closed the No Kings accounts on the day of the protest. Restored them later, saying “our bad.” But did not restore admin privileges.

2. We learned that millions of people had no idea about the protests because Meta suppressed posts about it.

3. Bluesky closed the @DemocracyMattersALot account for “unusual activity.” (No idea if it has been restored.)

And for months we’ve been watching the fascists do everything in their power to restrict voting rights.

The billionaires know they’re the minority. Not economically (which is obvious) but ethically. Otherwise they wouldn’t be working so hard to stop democracy.

I wanna believe most Americans are good people. We’re fighting for what’s right. But our enemy has massive resources and control. That what we need to quell.

Keep fighting. Stay vigilant. And for fuck’s sake, vote!

My ALL time FAVORITE sign from the @nokingsevents

It's very easy to get depressed by the state of politics right now, but then you see interactions like this one, and it rekindles your faith. A new generation of politicians will come forward and they will be different.

#AbdulElSayed #USpol #Politics

So apparently all the coordination, planning and communications for organising No Kings events on Instagram have disappeared and the account admins have been suspended.

So... here's the thing:

DON'T PLAN YOUR REVOLUTION ON THE KING'S BLACKBOARD.

The fact that organisers are depending on the availability of a platform run by any of the tech bros... well, it makes me think you aren't a terribly effective opposition.

Still figuring out the San Francisco propositions? You can trust our endorsements and #VoteWithTheLeague!

People rely on our proposition endorsements because they know we look out for the community, not special interests. For over 100 years, we've fought for good government, voting rights, and democracy.

If you go to https://lwvsf.org/ballot-recommendations, you can read the reasons behind our endorsements. Then you can decide for yourself and #VoteEarly!

The reason I posted this yesterday is that I suspended hundreds of accounts, just as @jerry did. And other moderators as well.

Important: this is NOT an issue with Mastodon. Or the fediverse. It’s a common thing that happens when passwords are compromised and folks use the same ones for many or all of their online accounts. Mastodon is simply one of the targets at the moment.

For server admins, Jerry has a script that will reset passwords on dormant accounts. I highly recommend running this on your instance.

Y’all! Please, please, please use appropriate passwords. We’re seeing a big spam campaign across the fediverse, using hacked accounts.

First, change your fediverse password. Especially if it’s reused elsewhere, short/weak, or really old.

Then, here are some simple steps to protect you and your accounts:

1. Never reuse passwords. Use a password manager so you’ll only have to remember one password.

2. Make sure your passwords are secure. They should be 12+ characters with at least one capital letter and one special character. Good password managers have a generator built-in.

3. Set-up multi-factor authentication (MFA/2FA).

4. Use passkeys wherever possible.

If you need help, ask someone. Folks who know will help.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this AI removal system for macOS 27?

https://github.com/omlahore/RemoveMacAI

In v27, Apple removed “Intelligence” from the UI, so it can’t be disabled as with previous versions.

I disabled everything Siri (and what I thought was Intelligence). But I can still see these chips in Messages. If it’s suggesting replies, it’s reading my messages.

What’s more, the language model consumes 27GB of space. WTF‽

I’ve read the code in RemoveMacAI, but I’m not knowledgable enough to be sure it’s safe. I’d love to know what y’all know.

Halloween is right around the corner. Here’s a retro sci-fi animation that could be conflated into the Halloween category if you squint.

I made this in 2002 or so. In Flash. (Yeah. I know.) It’s one of a few of my experiments with motion. I found it in an archive and converted it to video.

Enjoy. Or don’t.

Imagine if men used their technology skills for something meaningful instead of perversion and misogyny. This is why we need more women in STEM. But, of course, so many women want nothing to do with that industry because they’d be surrounded by pieces of shit like this.

Mastodon, I like your relative peace and the introspective, creative, thoughtful folks here. It's like a cafe filled with the most interesting people. Keep it up!

@DavidM_yeg @HarriettMB

I'm sure you would agree, the fun aspect about art is that it isn't real, we can play with it, that's why it's called art and not science.

The point of this type of photoshoot is to practise and refine skills as an photographer, an artist, not to fulfill a paying client's need for a precisely aged model for an accurate photograph for a biography of Mozart.

I think your photos are outstanding, Harriet . 🏆 Thanks for sharing your skills as a photographer and artist.😊

What a trip. I just found this old photo. It was taken in Barcelona circa 2014. The four of us here were all speakers at a conference called Webvisions.

I’m sitting next to the legendary @leaverou, whose name was unfamiliar to me at the time. Now, of course, I and many other front-end developers know her name. Or at least should.

Hi, Lea! 👋🏻 Your talk was rad!

Also at the table is accessibility advocate @brucelawson!

I think this was in the basement of the hotel where the speakers were staying.

If you actually read the “Passkeys are a trap. Do not use them.” post going around, you’ll find a transparent attempt to clumsily string together a conspiracy.

The post is predicated on the idea that a feature of WebAuthn called “attestation”, which is only used in high-assurance and usually corporate scenarios, and usually with physical hardware security keys, will be leveraged to hurt people, somehow.

The post posits that a website like X will bait and switch users: first, you get a passkey. Then, later, scary “attested” passkeys! This simply isn’t possible to do because attestation isn’t supported on the web for mass market, consumer authentication.

Attestation for passkeys (software-based, syncable credentials) is antithetical to their mass market goals, and would freeze out independent, non-corporate-backed credential managers. It’s an explicit non-goal of the designers of passkeys, who work together in a forum anyone can join.

And trust me, websites and apps like banks repeatedly asked for attestation at the beginning of the industry’s passkey journey. The platforms, browsers, and credential management apps have held firm that the goal of passkeys is reducing phishing and **not** some kind of trusted computing scheme. (And I will note: over my dead body!)

Besides the theory of the case being fundamentally wrong, there are several things that make the post disqualifying in terms of arguing something useful or important in the realm of security, privacy, and user authentication:

1. Intentionally presenting things that are complicated as inherently suspicious. (Delivering security by design can be complicated, yes!)

2. Describing TOTP as a “great solution” for adding security to a password-based account. When the most common threat model on the web is phishing (a word the post never mentions!), TOTP hardly buys you _anything_. TOTP is phishable.

3. Seeming to be unbothered by how many logical leaps are being taken without actually understanding the topic being discussed.

There are bad things happening in tech and untrustworthy people and companies do exist, but they’re largely in the AI space, not the “let’s stop people we love from getting compromised through phishing” space.

A Gothic Crypt In The Forest of Scotland

This enchanting small building is surrounded by a small woodland. The chapel and crypt were built in the mid-1800s. Built out of local sandstone, the building is small but beautiful.

The heavy wooden double doors are studded, in addition to having decorative scrolls and Fleur Di’ Lis metalwork. Above the door is a pointed arch which would have once held stained glass.
