    Only thing I would add is that he’s using that wealth to elect people who will enact his heinous views, used that influence to do DOGE, which is just a smokescreen to steal data and cancel investigations into his businesses at the cost of hundreds of thousands to millions of lives.

    @lexfri thank you, Lex. It’s important that people see reasoned responses to things like this so they have to square actually caring about issues vs. just virtue signaling about them.

    I used to spend a lot of time getting Jack owned Twitter to remove trolls and hate speech and probably was responsible for over a thousand takedowns.

    I believe in free speech and free discussion of ideas but there is a line between dehumanization and being a first amendment absolutist that is concerningly blurred

    @lexfri Long before Elon bought Twitter I have felt that there is a massive disconnect between what Twitter/X users feel the degree of influence of the platform is and what non users feel it is.

    Obviously X is popular among certain people in media so it has that second-hand extended reach. But the platform itself? It has fewer MAU than snapchat! I don't know a soul with an X account and I don't know a soul that considers having an X account anything other than a red flag.

    It's bad, too.

    @lexfri I left there a long time ago and see no reason to go back. And why should I follow the recommendations of an Apple fanboi? (For the record, I am using a MacBook and a few Android devices ... The world is not black and white)

    @lexfri Even if Elon wasn't a complete and utter [5 minute rant removed for brevity], i still would have left for mental health reasons - that place just wasn't good for me.
    Oh, wait, thats exactly what I did, i left way before he bought the place, as well as all Meta services.
    I like it here, and I'm not going anywhere else - i might change server occasionally, but Fedi is my home now.

    I dropped MacStories and Gruber over this. I’ll be blunt.

    They’ve determined that aren’t really affected by what goes on in this country, so it’s easy to ignore.

    Not so easy for Black people, for example.

    @lexfri Very well said, and way to bring the (multiple) receipts.

    I don’t think you need to glaze John as a preamble though; if he’s as smart as you say he is then I am pretty sure he knows it’s an unjustifiable position and is choosing to turn a blind eye to the evidence in favor of some mewling about “action.”

    I would only suggest he take in a performance of Cabaret should he be seeking some apt metaphors he could apply.

    @lexfri @Moltz All very well said; it’s super disappointing to see. As I heard recently when someone was discussing JKR, “you can’t claim to be an ally and buy the fascists the boots they use to step on trans people’s throats.” Same applies here. I’m not buying boots for fascists.

    Yes, despite being very intellectually capable he has some “interesting” blind spots and surprising pet peeves (like suggesting Trump has dementia when he has always behaved crazily or hating Bernie Sanders even more than he does Trump or believing Biden was progressive in spirit when he has always been one of the most conservative Democrats).

    I don’t know what Gruber said or thought about Biden – but whatever Biden’s personal ideological history, his administration pursued some of the most progressive economic, labor, climate, LGBTQ rights, and broader social policies of any modern Democratic presidency.

    @lexfri I could not agree more with this. It's a bummer that Twitter is gone-- none of the replacements come close to the experience I had there, even as mostly a lurker-- but I could never go to X. As a physician, medtwitter helped so many people and it just died with the acquisition (or maybe it's back somewhat there, but I'll never know). I feel a little sad that @gruber, someone I have followed forever and have immense respect for, would write his post.

    If your favorite bar lets Nazis hang out there, I’m sorry, but it’s a Nazi bar. I don’t care if John Ternus is there.

    @lexfri does he truly believe these Apple execs are X users? That Ternus is on his couch typing out posts? It’s marketing, it’s a corporate communications strategy! It could not be further from what he is implying. Among many other things that suck in his post, this little element seems to reveal a sad and naive parasocial feeling of camaraderie on his part. These folks are not just like you.

    @ted @lexfri Dosn’t matter. I lost all respect for him on day one when “he” posted he was on there. He is the boss of the company and he doesn’t have to appease the Nazis. I’d have done the very opposite and removed Apple entirely from it on day one.

    @lexfri While Musk is a huge issue currently I was mostly done with Twitter before 2020. I went back because during COVID it was almost the only game in town for diverse information. After 2022, though, the Fediverse took over that for me.

    These days I have little time for algorithm driven social media and definitely don’t care which famous/influential people are posting.
