My cat's antidepressant prescription comes with a free toy every month. Human pharmacies, take note.

A red plush cat toy with black spots, sealed in a clear plastic bag labeled "contains catnip", sitting next to an orange prescription bottle labeled "MINION (Feline). FLUOXETINE. Give 1 chew for anxiety"

@koushiniku it is not clear that these are more appealing than a regular capsule mixed into churu, or whether he's just gotten smarter about figuring out his food is drugged

@dan @koushiniku we actually got them because he’s on a weird amount. The other plus is that the pill is super tiny so I can fit it into a churu pocket. It’s really hard to get him to eat something without the three other cats stealing it.

@irene @dan Mine eats the pill pocket and spits out the pill, but he’ll take his pre-vet gabentin mixed with Churu, so I’m going to try the same with the Prozac. His first order should arrive in a few days. He has been picking fights with his brother (who is 5 lbs bigger) and peeing everywhere he shouldn’t.

@irene @dan Update: Ralph does not like powdered Prozac in Churu. Im pilling the old fashioned way and then using Churu as reward.

@koushiniku @dan yeah ours stopped taking the pill and I didn’t want to pill him so now it’s back to powdered. He seems to really like this flavor of this Calming Care probiotic the vet recommended for anxiety and it seems to hide some of the taste so we’re using it for now.

@MrInappropriate @dan vets try it for behavioral issues. In our case, Minion has social anxiety. He wants to be friends with our new cat but doesn’t know how to approach him/the new cat isn’t interested and he’s not getting the hints. He was quite a neurotic cat all along, jumping at the smallest thing, and the new cat just tipped him over the edge into not coming out to eat and hitting the other cats for no reason.

@irene @dan Wouldn’t pheromone Tx be the first option, rather than a blunderbuss approach ? Plug in pheromone Tx works really well in my experience for cats with anxiety of all types. Not in 109% of cases, obviously, but it has zero side effects.

For what Ozempempic is costing me every year here in the U.S., I should definitely be getting a teddy bear or a Hot Wheels or something with every injector pen!

I... uh... heard there are places where you can get generic Semaglutide for significantly less, if you, like, order at the right places. But don’t do that, just imagine the poor people at Novo Nordisk no longer working at Europe’s most valuable exchange traded company – that be really, really sad right?

Yeah, that's a possibility. But getting adjusted to Ozempic has been a years long and to some extent ongoing process. And I'm not eager to start that over, or start injecting unregulated off-brand who-knows-what into myself every day. No I'm no great fan of Novo either, but staying alive and fairly healthy isn't something I want to cut corners on. The system is broke. Capitalism is broke. Novo is just a symptom.

I guess it’s different when you’re already used to not being able to get your medication legally for the most part, I coud imagine it makes one worry less about it when one already is used to accessing their medication through these places.

Kinda fun how prices will suddenly drop by 80% in 2034 and literally nothing about product actually changed... :blobPikaFacepaw:

And just to be clear, I'm taking it for diabetes, not weight loss (though I've gotten that as a positive side effect). I really don't understand the people who take this for cosmetic weight loss. Too many disruptive side effects to be one of the "beautiful people."

Yeah, we’re talking it for ME/CFS off-label and its 150€/month legally over-the-counter... Insurance doesn’t cover it since it’s not approved. Side-effects are unpleasant when they appear, but it sure beats dying / being stuck in a dark room with only ~2h/day activity and hoping it doesn’t get any worse.

Also it being for weight loss when we’re kinda trying to gain weight feel like the heavens are laughing at us. Even more ironic that if we reached BMI 30 insurance would suddenly start paying for it. It’s just so weird... :blobbee_laugh_sweat:

Wow. Did not know it was being used to threat those. So sorry about your malady. Post covid? I've been following science Youtuber Physics Girl who has been mostly bedridden for over three years at this point with similar symptoms. Brain fog, weakness, fatigue, inability to tolerate light or noise. She managed to shoot and post a new science video a few weeks ago, but the backlash sent her right back to bedrest. It's been horrific to see someone so vital laid so low.

    @JSteven

    Post covid?

Likely, vaccination damage, although the current doctor believes it’s Post-Borreliosis. Regardless, I’m still glad the immunisations helped so many, I’m just not happy how there was no monitoring or education on the potential damages that were quite well-known at the time. Our case would have been very different had we not pressed on for 2 years after being waved off with psychotherapy and sleeping pills by the GP to the point of stopping to see any doctors again. (It hadn’t been the first time being dismissed either and I had still believed in shouldn’t have to need no help back then.)

And now we’ll likely finally receive our denail of benefits letter any day now after having had to wait (and pay) for over a year to even be formally eligable for pension, so we’ll finally be allowed to sue insurance over maybe getting pension (apparently 50:50 chance).

No, I’m not thrilled at all how this is being handled.

@dan that's a great idea! Ours gets what we reckon is human fluoxetine, because while it's liquid (handy for mixing), it's also mint flavour, that well known feline nemesis.

@dan I’m so curious, what does it take for a cat to be prescribed antidepressants? I saw you said it’s a sad cat, but like… how was depression ruled as the diagnosis?

    Hi @dan
As a cat person who deals with #depression, I am curious to know how one can tell if their cat is depressed, if the medication helps, etc.

@dan When I was a kid my family doctor would give well behaved kids a coupon redeemable at the pharmacy for a small cup of ice cream.

Why don't I get ice cream for going to the doctor now?
