    RE: uddannelse.social/@mosgaard/11

    Having motorized faders again, really make me miss having a more traditional* workflow:

    1. Idea / Sound design
    2. Composition / Production
    3. Mixing

    Today I do step 2 and 3 at the same time. And it will be hard to change that habit / hybrid approach.

    Perhaps it’s just a matter of practice?

    I’m pretty sure it eventually will mean I can be more focused on each part.

    *Back in the days that to me would be:
    Songwriting / Composing
    Arranging / Rehearsing
    Recording / Producing
    Mixing

    @mosgaard I'm trying to get to a place where I can pretty much just skip mixing. You can tell how it's going based on how much music I've released recently.

    :skellysip:

    Near zero. The answer is near zero music.

    @alisynthesis haha, well not finishing things is actually kind of a specialty of mine 😂

    ...But, that is actually part of why I wan't to change my proces. To help me devide the proces into individual steps I can finish and move on. So it's less "Make a tune" it's more "Get an idea, check", "Build up a loop/sound desing, check", "Arrange, check", "Produce, check" and then "Mix, check"

    Hopefully this "small wins" approach will help me finish songs. And so far it's helping.

    @alisynthesis it really is.

    To me it's also about getting used to my "new" instrument. I have written, played and recorded music for years, but entirely producing in the box is new.

    Of course I have made things only in the box for theatre, but it's a completely different discipline making something fulfilling others idea, than it is making music that feels like "you". The last one is tough to do alone. At least I feel it is.

    @mosgaard interesting! For me, finding musical partners I really mesh with is challenging (but VERY much better when it happens). Honestly, I'm always excited to play with people who are great at an instrument, even if I'm not exactly doing my thing.

    @alisynthesis @mosgaard

    Spent a lit of time stopping myself making mix decisions (over than basic balance) till the composition is finished.

    Years ago I'd be doing all kinds of bollicks, compressing snares or EQing shit and I didn't even have the arrangement down. Nowadays most mix decisions are more likely to be remove that noise, its in the way than use a bunch of plugins.

    @mosgaard I never really mix anything – the mix just "happens" while I am composing and producing, all at the same time :)

    That said, I probably should get other people to do the final mix more often. But there's seldom any money in my projects for hiring external mixing engineers, and in addition, the extra work alone of exporting stems and tracks in a so-and-so format might actually take longer than the time I do the mix myself. :D
