    RE: mastodon.social/@glyph/1174700

The website part of this project is very small but it's still definitely a few hours' work, and everybody involved (myself included) was quite busy and feeling ground down by the General State Of Things. But we got enough volunteers to do a bunch of really small simple tasks that it came together like 3x faster than in previous years and we were able to turn it around really fast as a result. Despite my own inability to find 3 continuous hours to actually focus we got it out in one weekend.

Sorry to make it about AI (why does everything have to be about AI now) but at a time when volunteer communities are tearing themselves apart both from the acrimony about the tech itself *and* the false sense that it can give you that You Can Do It On Your Own, You Just Need One More Prompt, the sight of a half a dozen people just typing some HTML whenever they had a few spare minutes to help out with a meaningful project that could make the world a lot better was honestly pretty moving

Crashing Out About AI In A Thread That Is Way Too Long is my superpower so if I have to do something for Politics I guess that's what I'm doing for Politics now

Please remember that the corollary here is that now that I've related this heartwarming story of collective purpose to you, if you don't donate (if you're legally allowed to donate to US campaigns) or at least share, you're harshing the whole vibe here, just ruining the party. So you just gotta donate now.

(I am kidding. Not everybody has resources they can contribute. Not everyone is comfortable sharing a slate they haven't personally vetted. I get it. It's cool. But also: c'mon.)

Dang y'all showed up fast. Thank you. Less than 24 hours and we are already halfway to our first goal. (The goal is at $20,000 but the campaigns could use a lot more than that, so, let's not limit our imaginations. But it would be a great start to hit that number.)

But this is good because we are launching late and the election is VERY soon.

For obvious reasons campaigns are much more able to use money before the absolute last minute. Deadline for the Florida candidate is 10/30 (and I think that's the last one) but sooner is better than later. Hopefully we can get some kind of countdown onto the site to make the urgency clearer

I don't have enough tracking to determine which donations came from where, but just based on timing, it seems like LinkedIn showed up for well less than 1/4 of what Fedi did. continue to put them to shame, please: we're just a bit over $25k now superswingdistricts.org/2026/

also if you're seeing this through the bridge on Bluesky but you're not donating then you are proving the inferiority of atproto as a network

we've got a countdown on the website now too, so you can see how little time is left (IT IS VERY LITTLE TIME)

    Donation Deadline: October 30

Time remaining: 9 days 9 hours 21 minutes 12 seconds

@djmitche yeah we are extremely late to the game already but a bit of a boost in the waning days can still matter quite a lot

@glyph Is there a feedback loop? Any idea if the downstream campaigns know what's going on or if it's even a drop in their bucket? Is it naive to consider that like, $2000 to a rural Iowa house race might be meaningful?

    @jay

    1. No, at least not to me. I think they might be vaguely aware they're in the slate.

    2. Yes, these local campaigns are often *tiny*, so small donations make a big difference.

@jay in fact, re: 2, there's verbiage on the site about this, smaller campaigns make WAY more efficient use of money than bigger ones. Give to a big campaign and you're likely to get another network TV ad that 3/4 of viewers just ignore or tune out, give to a small campaign and you'll get 1 more canvasser out on the road physically talking to people in person

@jmeowmeow kind of a lesson, maybe? I need to make my other projects less intimidating to approach, and ask for help more often. there's probably some irreducible complexity that would make e.g. Pomodouroboros more challenging to contribute to than SSD, but not _that_ much more challenging (particularly for my audience)
