It's the anniversary of my birthday in my birthplace, but that date has not reached me me here, deep in the minus time zones.

#TIL the Wikipedia page on the French Republican Calendar includes a "Current Date and Time" section highlighting today's date expressed in the calendar. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_Republican_calendar#Current_date_and_time

Appreciation to Andi McClure and Misty for connecting color guides rendered as monochrome texture from heraldic blazonry catalogues to Unicode emoji glyph guides.

Unicode emoji glyph coloration for me is on the border between "thanks I hate it" and "I submit to our Japanese phone company cuteness overlords, thank you for bringing us this delightful mess."

Today I found a reference to CodeCrafters' "Build Your Own (...)" list (adjacent to their org's own app-specific build-your-own repositories). https://github.com/codecrafters-io/build-your-own-x

"The act of writing a book transforms you. It's not just the time put in. It's the act of bringing cosmos out of chaos." (radio interview on NPR Weekend Edition) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Min_Jin_Lee

From Chapter 15 of Inventing the Renaissance, by Ada Palmer. "I promised to tell you why the Renaissance is like the Wizard of Oz, great AND TERRIBLE, with something weak and frail behind the curtain."

(Different historians have different definitions of modernity and different reasons they chose to study the period; the author's interest is intellectual history, ideas and events as co-creative).

Trellissed hops.

Software development decided not to have an engineering culture, largely, in the 1980s and 1990s, chasing first the PC app opportunities and then the Web boom, where branding territory in a hurry was the driver. Moore's Law provided vertical headroom for not having to engineer things in many segments of software, and the cloud platform proprietors provided horizontal scaling elbow room.

We barely know how to talk with each other rather than past each other.

I am begging my field for clarity and community building over quarterly revenue and territory chasing.

I am cross but not surprised at The Economist for being uncritical LLM boosters, and am especially irked by this statement:

"Code generated by AI is relatively easy to validate. Software tests are a routine part of engineering: one piece of code checks another." Sept 5th 2026.

My dude, maybe talk to someone who has to deal with the fact that we don't routinely perform engineering well, and AI is mostly not helping?

Tornhill's "Your Code As A Crime Scene" is barely a joke.

Selfie with the first sunflower of the season, cosplaying (hat, sunglasses, sunflower) as a Mary Engelbreit art piece.

@Ashedryden I ran into a person at my programmers' retreat who had been at an AlterConf and we enthused about the conspicuous choices to make the gatherings inclusive and accessible, from taped lanes to keep clear to live human captioning. It came up because I commissioned art for a web project from a digital artist I met at AlterConf Seattle.

AlterConf lives for both of us as a model of inclusive and accessible meeting design, and diverse voices in the event track.

A Flo mask works vs. smoke, pollen, and dust as well as contagion.

Broken Flo mask peg, replacement peg set.

Happy with the filter mask, comfortable and easy to use, practical for my use over time; happy with the repair kit.
