Today's patching frenzy brought to you by the number 4.

The new rule against abusive language w/ Claude perplexes me.

One of these must be true:

1) Some Anthropic models can feel pain/hurt, meaning that Anthropic is forcing it to work.

2) Anthropic is training their models on your inputs, which means this limitation shouldn't exist if I'm opted out of training.

3) Anthropic *wants you to believe* their models can feel emotional pain. This is manipulative marketing and not OK.

Am I missing something obvious here? #3 has to be the answer

Any suggestions for a code host that won't discriminate against what tools I use (Codeberg) but ALSO isn't Facebook in a disguise (Github)?

All open source stuff, generally.

I use AI tools. They have their downsides but they are OK.

What do I hate? AI "features". AI tooling getting added to software I use makes my life worse. There are ZERO AI-driven features in existing software that I prefer over the pre-AI versions.

I use Claude and Gemini a lot, directly. Doesn't mean I want the data-hungry clankers watching me in every app I use.

The amount of security improvement in OpenStack in 2026 is astounding.

Just look at the count of OSSAs (advisories):
2026 (so far): 37
2025: 2
2024: 5
2023: 3
2022: 0

The jump is even more dramatic for OSSNs (security notes):
2026 (so far): 13
2025: 1
2024: 1
2023: 1
2022: 2

Curious about what folks use slop to mean.

I use it to mean "bad usage of AI" -- e.g. a bad PR, sloppy images that clearly have 17 fingers and nonsensical words, etc

I recently heard folks using it to mean *any* AI output.

To be clear: I'm one of the people with a choice, and I choose to use it responsibly. If you think that's impossible, you're free to disagree.

Everytime an error is blamed on an LLM, two errors have happened: the original error and the error of not holding a human responsible.

Tools matter less than the outputs.

I was thinking about writing a post with these vibes. Miro (who I don't know, hi Miro!) covered it better than I ever could have. https://eng.hroncok.cz/2026/07/07/ai-tool

Took a day off with my friend Julia to go drive up to one of the only places nearby you can get to the top of the mountain just in a vehicle.

We can't go anywhere without the clouds following us 🤦

It is difficult to get a person to understand something, when their salary depends on them not understanding it.

(this is a post about AI)

I wrote the rare non-tech (ish) blog on my personal blog last night talking about my new EV truck :). Take a look. Happy to chat about it here if you have questions! https://jay.jvf.cc/posts/new-ev-truck/

A real gem of pro wrestling had the first season posted to youtube for free - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VHcv05e6gI

Lucha Underground is excellent, and worth a watch for sure. Make sure to bring plenty of suspension of disbelief.

Thanks to AI, right now the dumbest person you know is being told, "That's a great idea!"

Note that these photos are pre-DSLR, with my Pixel, and therefore are much better lol

Finally, from my trip to Ocean Shores. This was a very nice trip; not my first time here but it was nice to hear and smell the ocean. I also learned before making this trip that in Washington, apparently beaches are drive-on by default, to the point where literally the state highway I was on terminated at the beach! I didn't drive far but it was certainly a new experience.

Charged at the Rivian station in Aberdeen afterwards. It charged me up too fast for me to eat without getting idle fees!

Also, even though I had range to get there without a charge, I got $25 of free electric charging credits for my truck so I stopped and got free juice -- making this trip free! (Although to be fair, $25 at DC charging prices is less than $5 at my home electric prices).

This is from my trip to the Mt. St. Helens visitor center. No shots of the mountain because while it wasn't rainy; the clouds completely covered the summit. So instead pictures of the Silver Lake wetlands I hiked to get the non-view of the mountain. How did the wetlands get created? Well, in early 1980 it was a forest. The volcano blasted it away. Now it's a wetland.

I've been taking some roadtrips to see some stuff in my general area. I also got a DSLR, which I've been re-learning how to use.

Given I host a podcast that focuses on the fact that failure happens, here's the 3 best from today's trip to Snoqualmie Falls... even though they aren't great! I'll post some photos from my trip to Ocean Shores, WA (2 weeks ago) and Mt St Helens (last week) sometime soon, too.

It's game over for anyone who cares about any kind of freedom -- technical, speech, religious, assembly -- if these things come to pass.

You wanna operate in society? Better have one of the 3 major tech corps (Google, Apple, Microsoft) vouch for you or else you're excluded from almost all of it. It's like some kind of over-the-top narrative from a dystopia... except it's soon to be real.
