the above post's thread now contains nonzero examples of what the post is about, eg two guys i've never heard from before jerking each other off about how good they can use LLMs and a third commenting on how polite they're being.
one thing to understand is that these people are sore winners. the industry is ablaze with the various consequences of this bullshit, total global economic stranglehold but they're still so fragile about seeing even a shred of criticism cross their field of vision.

@jplebreton apologists in my mentions constantly telling me that software is functional and not artistic expression, that nobody cares about whether AI produced software they just care "if it works", meanwhile commentators on YouTube who _very_ clearly have no idea how software is produced are starting to call anything that looks like buggy shovelware "vibe coded"

@jplebreton I really do not want to be on the side of "social consensus is always correct" when it very much isn't, but when all of society rapidly forms a *new* consensus about something, it's important to look at that and ask, why does everyone think this all of a sudden? what is motivating them to do so?

@glyph @jplebreton "it was coined to describe an activity that boosters thought was neat"

it's rare that I bikeshed or SIWOTI but, no, this is not accurate at all

it was _literally_ coined by karpathy (awful.systems/post/3436005/612) as a self-descriptive term for disengaged, no-interest-in-outcome "coding"

_from start_ this entire shitshow has not been one driven from any single dimension of giving a quantum of a fuck about things

@glyph @jplebreton therein lies the point of distinction, I guess: I don’t think thought of this as “neat” at all

to write a short story characterising what I perceive his mood re this to be, it would be “well, fuck! finally I no longer have to give a shit”

yes, I am aware that this extrapolates and speculates. but this single datapoint does not stand alone, either

(it was not long after this tweet that he yeeted out of the org, too! and we’ve seen no Principled pulpits (from him) since!)

@glyph @jplebreton also, yes, I readily admit to being deeply cynical of claims made by these clowns, of not giving them even the slightest bit of leeway

to that I say “they shouldn’t have lied so fucking much”

I’ve met a few of these fuckers in person. I’m pretty sure you have too. broadly, they are not honest about things. broadly, they should be held to a higher standard of fact and truth, simply on account of a decade-long track record of untruth and misdirection

@froztbyte @jplebreton honestly not sure how to parse this, it sounds sort of like a distinction without a difference. like it's phrased as an intense disagreement but I'm not sure where the disagreement is :)

@glyph @jplebreton I added more words in elsebranch, but, short form is “I think karpathy’s a fucking sociopath and doesn’t give the slightest shit about his impact on the world. so maybe we shouldn’t air his nonsense”

(and I could add more names to that list)

@jplebreton "Anyone who uses more AI than me is a koolaid-drinking vibecoder slinging slop bombs, anyone using less AI than me is a luddite who will get left behind." This gets said regardless of the speaker's level of AI usage.
