just realized i hadn't had honey nut cheerios in like 30 years and that the typeface might have changed since then, in which case the name of the extradimensional beings would be "the Xennials"

[randomly to someone on MTA] extradimensional beings are attempting to communicate with me using the Honey Nut Cheerios typeface

This toot should go into the anthropic IPO briefing as the actualization of their business model. Everyone having to spent their own tokens on the (roughly) same (probably incomplete) fix is a wet dream for those who hate commons and collectivism.

This is the last stop before "why do we need maintainers and security releases anyway? We just fork our own php"

THE project for the commons bragging about it is nothing but tragic though.

thx @dull for reminding me this cover illo exists

as for my specific aesthetic preferences on this, i am squarely in the "chunky" camp opposite the "beepy" and "scratchy" camps

i remember it being useful enough at one point i had it bookmarked and would check in on it every couple weeks. and then sometime after biden declared it "over", it got less useful. and then of course trump/rfk were the grave diggers. the natural progression, of states gradually abdicating all power to help people.

https://covid.cdc.gov this page has 404'd for about the past week and at this point i think they might have just given up on it (ie having a CDC information page of any kind for covid)

this is a fine piece but i wanted to push back on a wording choice that was probably not very intentional:
> autonomous vehicles are only as safe as their owners program them to be
no. they are [as safe as their owners program them to be] MINUS an undisclosed, heavily gamed margin of error that the people selling it will tell any lie they can get away with to make you believe will only go down and eventually to zero. and they're willing to gamble your life on that for a shot at a new monopoly.

@maya my sister went to art school and learned how to give and receive critique of her work there. I went to school for computer science and had to learn how to give and receive code review on the job.

semi related, I graduated from school and started working in tech in 2015 right after gamergate & I think that the way that was handled was an indicator to me re: interpersonal disagreement toxicity in the tech industry. time and again I am reminded of the role of online harassment in shaping the industry I still work in today

the above post's thread now contains nonzero examples of what the post is about, eg two guys i've never heard from before jerking each other off about how good they can use LLMs and a third commenting on how polite they're being.
one thing to understand is that these people are sore winners. the industry is ablaze with the various consequences of this bullshit, total global economic stranglehold but they're still so fragile about seeing even a shred of criticism cross their field of vision.

https://www.verticalslice.news/rockstar-accused-of-rewarding-moles-for-spying-on-union-members-with-additional-time-off doing this and being rewarded with an expired chipotle coupon is inevitably what comes from deep denial of your own value, and that of your coworkers. love yourself and your comrades enough to never do this, or anything approaching it.

and to make it more explicitly political, attribution is one of the most basic ways we can acknowledge that our labor connects us to one another. all the essentials and conveniences we enjoy come from someone and we should name them, respect them, and compensate them in gratitude. the removal of attribution is closely connected to, is a means of, the exploitation of labor. capital's ideal docile subject gets treats from heaven and neither knows nor cares where they come from.

RE: https://social.coop/@cwebber/117440946737028822

attribution is a bedrock social concept for me. it's a major way we navigate the world, discover new things, develop taste, interact with one another in a positive way. even in a fully post-capitalist world it would still be important.
what's that band you're listening to? who drew that art on your t-shirt? that sandwich looks good, where's it from? that's clever, who said that? i trust [person's] opinions on [subject]. etc.
anything that removes or muddies attribution is socially corrosive.

as the term's reputation worsens, expect to see more and more LLM users insist that *their* usage isn't vibe coding, it's those other less skilled / less ethical programmers, over there, for whom the term exists.
