"capsules everywhere" raises interesting points about how aesthetics and functionality interrelate. one can easily imagine whipping up a version of a capsules-heavy design where every shape is squared off (or rounded rects, or what have you) but then the whitespace margins want to be adjusted, and even with a light touch the whole design soon feels dramatically different, and thus how it feels to use... so nothing is "just an aesthetic choice" really! it's all connected, it all matters.

some of the weariness with eg the recent firefox redesign is clearly that all of this feels so familiar already, just shuffling around the same design vocabulary we've had for 20+ years now... for what benefit? i get it. UI design has been trend-driven for a long time now, and disrupting peoples' hard-won familiarity with the tools they need to work and live for no better reason than fashion feels disrespectful.

@jplebreton I can't speak for other Firefox/Waterfox users, but I'm very interested in a UI that remains consistent without constant shuffling every 6 months. I feel like all the customisation I do is putting stuff back the way it was after an update :/

It all feels like gratuitous tweaks in order to make things feel "fresh" (gross to me) rather than any kind of conscious iteration or exploration (cool to me). I'm sure communication/framing is a big part of that, but since there is none...

@Cheeseness I'm 100% with you. I'm ambivalent about the recent design but when, for example, vertical tabs made it to release I tried it out and liked it enough it's been my default since. And most users probably never paid it any mind, so it had zero negative impact for them.

@jplebreton Oh cool. I tried it and didn't find it helpful (but I also don't think I have typical browser usage patterns). That's an example of a feature that doesn't feel gratuitous to me, for sure, and I'm glad it's available!

@Cheeseness @jplebreton part of the reason I have Firefox-or-derivative for so long is Tree Style Tabs. I was perfectly happy for that to be an extension (except that it broke at one point and that made me sad). I assume other people are happy with their tabs but I like my trees so much that I learned to move Firefox profiles between computers to maintain them.

but I broadly agree that, after initial tweaks, I arrived at a UI that worked for me and it should never be changed ever
