May 3, 2026, 11:35 PMNever let anyone try to talk you out of a quick half hour DIY project. Those three hours will be the best six days of your life.

BenjaminBenjaminNelan@mastodon.socialMay 4, 2026, 2:40 AM@bloor My favourite part of DIY is when I go to fix something on my shelf and find a notepad filled with terrible handwriting hypothesising what's broken and how to fix it.
I'll examine it, add some more notes, think, "I'll get back to this soon," and put it back on the shelf.
All the handwriting is mine. The thing is never getting fixed.

DeanFarrellDeanFarrell@mstdn.plusMay 4, 2026, 3:21 AM@bloor If you really want to drive yourself nuts, try writing a novel--especially one set in an earlier time period, which requires a shitload of research. That's what I'm doing.
May 4, 2026, 5:12 AM@bloor You've been surveilling my home office, have you?
Ω 🌍 Gus PoseyGustodon@mas.toMay 4, 2026, 6:15 AM@bloor It's cool that you were able to complete it in two weeks.
Colincolinstu@birdbutt.comMay 4, 2026, 6:32 AM@bloor @TerrorBite why get it done in six days when you can sit and stew and think about it for six years and THEN finally take care of it and then it's finally over with.
Jasper Sparks :veripawed3:JasperSparks@furries.clubMay 4, 2026, 6:47 AM@bloor trust me, the last 6 months of wallpapering 1 portion of the house has been the most fulfilling 7 years

GutterPoetryGutterPoetry@mastodon.me.ukMay 4, 2026, 8:31 AMThe research odysseys are what do it for me. That and the fact that I procrastinate uncontrollably when faced with boring parts.
Part researched or completed projects abound, to the level that I think I would now qualify as a minor hoarder!

Mr. Encyclopediamrencyclopedia@retro.pizzaMay 4, 2026, 11:30 AM@bloor it might involve one quick trip to the hardware store, but three visits later you'll really be pleased with the results.

@remcow feel free… I’m pretty sure the format/idea isn’t mine originally although I cannot place/recall what genre I saw it in, maybe car modding? The DIY spin is mine.

May 5, 2026, 5:02 AM@bloor procrastinating 6 days to gather the strength to go into the garage to finally do the half hour DIY job in 15 minutes at the tail end of cleaning up a space to work in for three hours. :meow_goggly_thumbs_up:

Diandra Linnemanndiandralinnemann@mastodon.socialMay 5, 2026, 8:26 AM@bloor Decided to make myself "one quick crochet shawl, nothing fancy!" seven years ago. My office has been overtaken by yarn, everything in our flat comes in crochet and everyone is afraid (or excited) I'll crochet them something as a gift. Half my closet is shawls at this point. I beg people to take them off me. Except for the two dozen favorites, of course. The tomcat has a 100-Euro real wool cardigan he likes to sleep in (he crawls into the sleeve).

Jay Peachjaypeach53@mastodon.socialMay 11, 2026, 10:46 AM@bloor yeah, the first 90% of the project takes 90% of the time; the other 10% takes another 90%, at least. Others say double to triple the estimate, then change to the next higher timescale (days to weeks, weeks to months).
