    As for a trick played out innocent Eve that angered this deity so much that he went into the largest ever level of disproportionate punishment in the form of 'original sin'.

    Quite how we can be born sinful without doing a sinful deed ...

    And there are multiple versions of the Bible with multiple different collections of different stories in them. Weird that god wouldn't have settled on one set ... I guess he was busy.

    And the sheer audacity coupled with stupid implausibility to attribute to their deity absolute power and compassion. Yet somehow resorts to 'mysterious ways' when the vast ocean of suffering on this planet does not engage that infinite compassion.

    The various churches have different collections of stories in their Bibles as I understand it although I've never tracked them all to ground. I was just reading an article which was mentioning one of the stories in the Egyptian Orthodox Bible which is no idea in any of the others. I can't remember the name of it right now.

    Later when you're the one who thinks helping refugees is good, for example, you are also a dangerous fool to yourself.

    @abartlet @wannabemystiker @vicfroh thing about the quote is it's obviously hyperbolic to make a point. It's not true for _all_ Catholics but true enough for enough of a majority.
    One of the core things of Catholicism AFAIK is the Transubstantiation and out of the ones believing it there's a whole bunch not acting on Jesus' words about caring for others. If they did, orgs like Caritas wouldn't need to exist (or would at least be organized radically different).

    @vicfroh @clintruin had a convo with a Catholic friend who explained that literal literally has a different literal meaning here.

    Like - atomically it's still bread.

    But /really and literally/ the bread is the body of Christ.

    @vicfroh His disciples understood the spiritual meaning of eating his flesh and drinking his blood.

    #Jesus is the Word of God made flesh. When you read or listen to his word, you are consuming his flesh. His word is #spiritual nourishment for your soul.

    Live according to his teachings, then his spirit is flowing through you, like a heart pumps blood throughout your body. That is drinking his blood.

    Man does not live by physical bread alone. Eat God's word and obey it, to live.

    @vicfroh There are huge problems with the Catholics, particularly sexual abuse by priests and thinking women's only purpose is about pumping out babies. Those things are not forgivable. But they do take helping the poor a lot more seriously than, say, evangelical Protestants. The Catholic church closest to us runs a food bank and another one close by is a major supporter of homeless folks, collecting clothing and supplies. The cannibalism is crazy, but at least in the US the Catholics stress the Sermon on the Mount and many, not all, protestant churches don't preach it to the point where their followers find the language foreign, "woke", and that faith is all you need, screw the poor because you have a personal relationship with Jesus (atheist here, recovering Catholic).

    @vicfroh I am in a country where Catholicism is the dominant religion. The Church’s social teaching is often left-leaning (healthcare should be free or affordable, workers may form unions and strike, and immigrants must earn the same wages as locals for the same work and enjoy the same rights). Yet, Catholic politicians couldn't care less.

    As I've said to my, very Catholic, parents many a time. If as individual "good" Catholics, you have to defend your faith against generalisations supported by looking at individual "bad" Catholics, then it's a Catholic problem, and saying that "no real Catholic..." isn't a defense, it's a confession.

    My father didn't really agree until he was about 20 minutes into a story about how the woman who he saw begging always refused "real" help and only wanted cash.
    My siblings and I stopped him to ask how he knew that what she needed more than she did.
    We offered examples of multiple situations were cash would be the "real" help. None had occurred to him because they were outside his world view.
    It took him being called out very specifically for him to realize he wasn't "helping the poor", he was acting in exactly the way he condemned in "bad" Catholics by putting himself in a position of authority over this woman because he thought he knew better how she should live her life.

    @deirdrebeth That is a great point, though sad the way cultural conditioning has shaped us. Luckily the world is changing by showing it's completely normal distrust of dogma and fear based religions. Thanks for sharing!

    @vicfroh the regularly church going Roman Catholics I know personally do more to help the poor than any secular person I know personally

    I disagree with their theology but they walk the walk, and I respect that

    In my area, they amass political power by running for offices and then use that power to destroy trans kids’ lives. (See: a large number of our state senators, one of our national senators who was our former governor and should have been excommunicated for one of his actions, and our governor.)

    @Tedre123 @vicfroh Yep, the Catholics are definitely not perfect (and a lot of them ignore what the pope talks about), but certain so-called evangelical denominations, especially in the US are far worse in this regard.

    PS: Some evangelical really hate catholics, too.

    @vicfroh I believe that you might be mistaking the Catholic faith with another denomination of Christianity.
    While some other denominations of Christianity believe that scripture is God speaking through God’s own words, Catholics believe that scripture is God speaking through human authors. Catholics believe that therefore, God speaks through the faith, intelligence, abilities, and LIMITATIONS of the human authors, which is why Catholics don’t treat the Bible “100% literally.”

    @vicfroh @dgoldsmith that's X-level discourse: punchy but wrong. I've known plenty of Catholics who fall into both categories on that because while the denomination is the same there are different political factions. Direct blame to people based on what they do.

    bishops-lords in the middle / modern ages, sure

    but in the last century or even two, if there is one thing the Catholic church has been pretty consistent at was feeding and clothing the poor, even when being otherwise reactionaries who were trying to prevent any improvement in society (including some of the ones that would have dismantled some of the causes that made the poor poor).

    prosperity gospel protestants, on the other hand…
