    Apparently Hasbro has begun demanding that CHILD ACTORS in their cartoon series like Peppa Pig sign over the rights for the company to use to clone their voices for future commercial use.

    CHILD ACTORS are being asked to sign away control of their voices.

    I think this should be illegal. Parents should not have the legal right to sign away their child’s voice or likeness to be turned into corporate assets forever.

    the worst part of it is its done to eliminate the need to constantly hire child actors - their voices obviously change as they get older, and also even in USA there are really strict protections on their working hours (so it doesn't adversely affect their childhood)

    @vfrmedia @MamaLake They don’t need a perpetual license to do that. If they wanted to use AI to save the child from excessive labor, then the voice should be licensed only for the duration of the movie production, and the model destroyed when production ends.

    @drahardja @MamaLake indeed, but they would likely be doing that *because* they find the existing child protection rules too onerous and were never happy about them in the first place. Its been contentious for decades, in 1980s/90s we Brits often laughed at how actors in USA "high school" series are well in their 20s to avoid these regulations, whereas in UK/Europe when such series were made by PSBs (public service broadcasters) they used real teenagers (and put a school classroom on site so they don't miss out on their education).

    But this is of course more expensive and the industry has been plagued by safeguarding scandals, so around the 2000s the PSBs increasingly stopped making such programmes and imported the USA versions...

    This will mean they will not earn again. So they have nothing to lose by telling Hasbro to fuck off. And then screwing them over the repeats of shows they’ve already recorded.

    @drahardja You might be interested in the #scifi film entitled The Congress (2013). “It stars Robin Wright as a fictionalized version of herself who agrees to have a film studio use a digital clone of her in any film they want.”

    @drahardja I'll go one farther and say that there shouldn't be child actors. It's a form of child labor; it exploits workers who are too young to advocate for themselves.

    And that's not the worst exploitation that happens in that business, either.

    @drahardja It's especially unnecessary in animation. It's not like people are watching The Simpsons or The Boondocks and saying "Hey, that's not a ten-year-old boy, that's a woman's voice!"

    @drahardja about 20 years ago I had to sign a contract with Disney. They were considering using my daughter's video in an ad. The contract gave them full rights to her likeness in image and sound, for all time and all space. I remember thinking that the contract took into account the possibility of a multiverse and it locked us in across all of them.

    At the minimum, have any agreements become void (not voidable, void) by operation of law when the child reaches the age of majority.
    Better not to sign diabolical contracts like that in the first place though.

    @drahardja Corporations shouldn’t be able to buy voices or appearances for future use (without further compensation and strict time limits) for any actor. Not just the children. But doing it to children is particularly evil.
