I first heard about the Treaty of Shimonoseki in history classes almost forty years ago, and at that time had no idea what a Shimonoseki was, let alone where it was, so it never occurred to me I would one day get there. Later in the day yesterday, we did pass through Shimonoseki, but I had better sense than to inflict my nerdery on my travelling companions, so we didn't visit the Shunpanro Hotel. I believe there is a small museum to the treaty.

Trigger warning for a unique blend of history nerdery and the "almost famous" flavour of something i didn't quite do.

Yesterday, on a short visit to Japan, we got to the northern edge of Kyushu and saw across the strait the Shunpanro Hotel where the Treaty of Shimonoseki was signed in 1895, (among other things) ceding Taiwan to Japan, starting 50 years of Japanese rule.

The problem is finding out that they are like that in the first place. I wonder if goosey-loosey has lessons on how to spot those folk from afar.
