I first heard about the Treaty of Shimonoseki in history classes almost forty years ago, and at that time had no idea what a Shimonoseki was, let alone where it was, so it never occurred to me I would one day get there. Later in the day yesterday, we did pass through Shimonoseki, but I had better sense than to inflict my nerdery on my travelling companions, so we didn't visit the Shunpanro Hotel. I believe there is a small museum to the treaty.
