@ascentale @bikenite Two important new bike lane connections made this week, one in Shoreline, one in Kenmore.
https://mastodon.murkworks.net/@moira/116739249537049588
I will be dropping maps updates tonight.
@moira @ascentale @bikenite a beauteous sight for sure!
@grammasaurus @ascentale @bikenite That's been a big problem, it's really nice to see it fixed.
The lanes aren't exactly top standard - they're not to Kenmore standard, much less Seattle - but given how squeezed that road is in places, I'm pleased they managed it at all.
(Also, Kenmore standard is not a backhanded compliment. Kenmore's bike lane standard is the best on the north end, everyone else should take some notes.)
@moira @ascentale @bikenite It's so funny for me to see "Kenmore" as a town name because I truly only knew it as a Sears brand name. #BikeNight
@meganL @ascentale @bikenite When I ran a recurring music festival for five years we had a fake talent show where we gave away an "all expenses paid trip" (in the form of bus passes) to either Kent ("One stop shopping for all your dead body in a truck needs") or to Kenmore ("Where the appliances go to die.")
It was originally a sawmill town and then a prohibition party town - literally dozens of speakeasies and dance halls - founded by a guy from Kenmore, Ontario, which in turn had been named for Kenmore, Scotland.
But I, too, still think of the appliances. xD
@ascentale @bikenite #BikeNite A8 we had a three day long weekend last Sat/Sun/Mon and I spent it on the coast along the Great Ocean Road, awesome surf all weekend although I'm not a surfer, those that are were out there having a ball
Rode about 40km each day down the coast and back, watching the sea mist rising up the hillsides
@ascentale @bikenite A8: This week was my first trip along the Elroy-Sparta trail in Wisconsin. So for a while I didn't see anything but my flashlight along the worn grey wet stone of the floor, and then I saw the light at the end of this long dark tunnel. It's 3/4 mile long and there's dripping water the whole time, as well as running streams on both sides, preventing you from touching the walls. There were warnings about protecting the bats, and I was all alone. Spooky!
@djuber @ascentale @bikenite the DWP trail, near Smithville, MN, USA
@morgan @djuber @ascentale @bikenite
The Strawberry line, Somerset, UK. Tuesday last week
@MatthewNewell @morgan @djuber @ascentale @bikenite 2019 for me. My buddy had gone on beyond the entrance and I made him backtrack. Glad I did.
@ascentale @bikenite I picked up some native plants from Bartram's Garden in my front loader. My bike and I also checked out the temporary pedestrian street/tunnel at Reading Terminal Market.
@ascentale @bikenite
#BikeNite A8:
Yesterday on the Route of the Hiawatha in Montana and mostly Idaho I saw tunnels and trestles galore. Plus mountains and sky and wildlife. It was awesome.
@MartyCormack @ascentale @bikenite
Ohh, that does look utterly lovely!
@MartyCormack @ascentale @bikenite
Damn, Marty, that looks like a spectacular place to ride!
A8. Our local Social Cycling ride had a Pride Ride on Thursday, and I was very pleased by my handiwork with a fiberglass pole, 3 zip ties, and this rainbow wind sock.
Deer wondering why I was interrupting her trailside lunch.
@ascentale @bikenite A8: This week was an annual event put on by 3rd graders in the HS auditorium. One of the parents sent this photo—a record number of families arrived by bike to avoid the usual parking hassles! #progress
The #sunset is happening right now!
@ascentale @bikenite Adding #FruitToot
@ascentale @bikenite
A8.
I was on foot, not a bike, but spotted my first goose family of the season off the Trans-Canada Trail.
A8. Ok, I'm bending the rules of this question once again because my photo isn't new this week, but It does memorialize my first bike-to-Costco trip I ever took, which was earlier this Spring. It felt amazing to run this errand without a car!
The panniers are full and balanced as best as I could, and i had about 30-40 pounds of seltzers and other drinks
loaded into the trailer, ready for my trip home.
The picture is not the greatest, but I couldn't wait for the van to load and leave.
@Heyweldon @ascentale @bikenite Don't forget to fill out a Costco customer comment card asking for more accessible, secure, and sheltered racks!
Congrats on #Quaxing
@meganL @ascentale @bikenite
Ooh, this is a great idea! The bike racks at my Costco aren't great, and there are too few of them.
@ascentale @bikenite #bikenite A8, I saw these guys on the Dead Swede 100 mile course Saturday, handing out beer and bacon from the cooler on the back of the tandem. Legends.
@RayKuntz @ascentale @bikenite That is awesome. I love stuff like that. #BikeNite
A8: Went to #IslandFancCon by bike in Saturday, hauling my costume (#RoyalManticoranNavy) on my trailer. There was some rain on the way there, but I had my poncho, and a rain cover for the trailer. On the way back I used the new overpass for the #GallopingGoose trail for the first time. Also there was a truck in the bike lane on the way there.
@ascentale@sfba.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social A8: My daughter wants to cycle to kindergarten every day, and she wants me to bike along (instead of following her by foot). I love it.
#BikeNite #MastoBikes
@daihard
You have done well.
@ascentale @bikenite
@daihard @ascentale @bikenite Adding #CycleParkingAudit to this photo of what I call a "clothes hanger rack".
Congrats that the kid prefers to cycle and prefers you to cycle too!
@meganL@mas.to @ascentale@sfba.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social Thanks! Yes, I agree these are anything but good racks. I guess their excuse, if any, is that they're for elementary and middle schoolers, whose bikes tend to be small, conventional ones. 😅
@daihard @ascentale @bikenite What a great daddy you must be!
Keep her excited about riding her own bike!
@ascentale #BikeNite A8, Mt Hood yesterday, as seen from the landing strip that is S Naito between downtown and where it joins Barbur Blvd. Both #stroads from #Portland's mid century love affair with the motorcar. (Now excess lanes immediately next to six-lane i-5, and somehow still not allowed to have bike lanes 🙄 despite being the only flat and direct route from SW. #InducedDemand )
@ascentale @bikenite #BikeNite A8. Couldn't help but pick up another bike project, lol.
@ascentale @bikenite A8. This week I finally made my first ride of the season into the local village. It's normally a little over 7 miles (11.27 km) round-trip, but I explored some dead end side roads and nearly doubled the distance of the trip.
@ascentale @bikenite A8. A year ago on June 8th, one of my neighbors was killed by a driver in a large pickup truck while walking across a street in the crosswalk. On Monday, we dropped off flowers at the location & her sister was sitting nearby, so we stopped and talked with her for a whole. The photo is a protest sign that we put up and maintain. #BikeNite
@kimu ohhh that’s really sad ☹️
@ascentale and also angry-making. But mostly sad.
@kimu @ascentale @bikenite A8. An organization I volunteer with organized a massive vigil ride and die in for a city planner on our DOTs Complete Streets team that was killed by two motorists. https://blockclubchicago.org/2026/06/09/hundreds-ride-through-bridgeport-to-honor-cyclist-riley-oneil-and-demand-safer-streets-people-are-dying/ #BikeNiteQ #bikenote #chicago #bikechi
@andrew773 I heard about his death and the protest. I’m so sorry.
@kimu Sorry for your loss as well. It's been a tough year for cycling advocacy in Chicago, with an increase in fatal crashes and conservatives trying to make cycling infrastructure a wedge issue but we've made a lot of progress the last several years.
@kimu @ascentale @bikenite That's a sad story. Good to hear that you dropped some flowers! Great sign!
@ascentale @bikenite A8.Grey skies. <moans about weather in English> #BikeNite
@FourT4 @ascentale @bikenite It looks like you're posting a photo of your ascension to Heaven. :) #BikeNite
@meganL @ascentale @bikenite every trip that isn't in a motor vehicle is sanctified 😃 and I'm sanctimonious 😃😃
Spent Thursday - Thursday in Somerset - SW England. Weather was dreadful - rain each and every day. Three days with nice sunny intervals after morning storms. Everything got wet.
Got to see my family, the coast, the Mendips, Wells and Glastonbury - so very nice indeed but; come on, it's June, I shouldn't need to be thinking waterproof plus layers
@ascentale @bikenite A8. Here's a splendid Raleigh Eighteen from a bike shop window in Hope Derbyshire, UK.
It'd be a brave individual who contemplated some of the off road riding in this area on that.
To be fair, it'd be a brave individual who attempted some of the *on* road cycling round there on that machine...
@yorkie @ascentale @bikenite this is true. I'm already wincing at the idea of a Winnats pass hill climb challenge on that.
Confession I was wincing enough on my mountain bike & that's got a 52t rear cassette (unlike the Raleigh).
Aye, and looking closely at the photo, it appears to have a Sturmey Archer 3-speed hub gear and no cable. So it'll be wedged in top gear!! 😲😲😱😱🤯🤯
A8: I went for a ride around the south west part of York last weekend, partly areas I haven't visited for (probably) decades, but mainly areas I haven't ridden through previously. This included Victoria Bar, one of the newer "gateways" through the city walls, built in the late 19th century to improve access to parts of York which were previously only accessed by a very circuitous route.
Taken for bikenite on the commute home
A8. I took my bike on the train to deliver some plants to a friend, which was a good way of avoiding the worst of the urban sprawl. I did also discover that all of my phone bicycle navigation apps do not seem to give priority to cycle paths, even when you are on one. That was how I learned about Geovelo, which I plan to try next.
@ascentale @bikenite #bikenite A8: Just this little fella lurking just outside the front door ...
@ascentale @bikenite A8. My photo didn't turn out, but I saw the edge of the nightly protest in Tirana on Tuesday as I was returning from Bike Fest Tirana.
Photo here from earlier this morning. This is Skanderbeg Square, a central square which hosts a lot of events. The protests start here every night at 6pm and then start moving south to the PM's office.

@ascentale @bikenite A8. More on the mosaic mural here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_History_Museum_(Albania)#The_mural_mosaic #Albania #BikeNite
@meganL The trike looks neat.
@ascentale @bikenite A8. Not cycling-related at all, but I made a new-to-me galette with ricotta, tomato, and shallots. For a first attempt, I’m super happy with the result 😀
