I deleted my Facebook account in 2017 because I saw what was coming and I didn't like it. I didn't "deactivate" it, I deleted it, according to all the "are you sure?" prompts I recall wading through to get the final message that if I don't log into it in the next 30 days, it's all gone forever.

This morning I woke up to a 2FA email request from Facebook, to the email address I last used with the service. It was a legitimate email from FB so I decided to see if my account was really just deactivated instead of fully deleted. Welp, guess what? I logged in with the password stored in my password manager, and it sent me a new 2FA code. I continued all the way in, and absolutely nothing was actually deleted. All of my friends from that era who still had Facebook accounts were in my friend list, my last post from the summer of 2017 was still there, and many more sent before that, along with photos that I recall individually deleting before closing the account just in case.

    Facebook lied. Imagine that.

Of course I immediately went through the whole deletion process again, confirming I was sure at least seven times, and got the same "if you don't log in over the next 30 days all posts are deleted and unrecoverable". Gee, where have I heard that before?

I will try logging in around the first of December just to see what happens. As for that first 2FA request this morning, clearly someone has my FB login info. I know there was a breach a few years ago but I wasn't concerned back then since like a good tech person I only ever used that password on that site (which I confirmed with my password manager), and besides I had deleted my account right? ...Right. And I know that even if they really "delete" it this time and I can't get back in, they still have my data forever.

So the moral of the story (and we all know this already, don't we?) is that all corporations; all data holders and harvesters; all social media companies; all entities trusted with our personal and financial data, are lying to us. They are all defying the law, they are all disregarding their own data retention, privacy, and security policies, and they know they can get away with it so they do it with impunity. I'm in the US so there are virtually no laws protecting my rights. But even in the EU, the GDPR is not enough. Facebook/Meta was recently fined nearly a quarter of a billion Euros over "right to be deleted" legislation, and they brushed it off like the minor inconvenience it was.

    @kaidenshi

As a data point, I went through a very similar process in 2020. Trying just now, #Facebook can't find any account associated with any of my email addresses or my phone number.

Please note I do not AT ALL doubt your experience, but I seemed to have slipped through. I do assume that they still have all of my data, of course.

This confirms what I've always suspected, that once you have a FB account you have it in perpetuity and you can't rely on them to delete it when you ask them to.
Its not your data any more.

it was never your data. doesn't anyone ever read the 'user agreements?'

everything you post on facebook belongs to facebook. the same is true of google - everything pasted via google - gmail, groups, etc. - belongs to alphabet corp. the same goes for android.

those operating systems and phones do not belong to you - you are just allowed to use them to generate data for the techbros.

    you seriously didn't know this?

@kaidenshi @eniko same thing happened to me. I thought I deleted it and then discovered I had merely deactivated. I did something different more recently and I’m pretty sure it really is deleted now with no possibility of recovery. But who knows.

@kaidenshi As someone who works in digital archiving -- I want you to know that this mirrors my own experience. I completed a migration within the last 5 years (hardware / OS / database / app software) and there was a group of data that was excluded by virtue of its age -- the last time data was loaded was nearly 10 years ago.

The client demanded I migrate it to complete the project. They didn't know what it was, so I peeked as some of the data -- and it's all intensely personal stuff. Names, addresses, phone numbers, account numbers, employers, job titles, spouses & co-signers on accounts and more.

When I informed the client, and pressed them to refuse to migrate the data, they acknowledged my concerns, and told me to do it anyway. I forwarded that eMail chain to an eMail address under my control, and migrated the data.

It's an epidemic of private data theft. The rest of the world needs a european-style 'right to be forgotten' law.

The big corps only hide your data, never delete.

The only solution is not joining,
I created temporary email address and changed to them.
Then changed all the stuff I could
Then requested deletion (Linkedin, Facebook, Twitter).
    Then deleted those email accounts.
    Not good enough.

i heard this was an issue so in 2014 when i left fb what i did was unfriend everyone and unfollwed all groups etc. and it's now just an archive. sucks.

@joyfulcarla @kaidenshi It isn’t “just” an archive. It’s the core of Facebook’s learning about you, and thousands of other sites serve Facebook-issued metadata so they are still tracking you (and probably will forever).

@kaidenshi OK, I checked, and I can't log in. It says my email address isn't connected to an account. So hopefully they've tightened up their procedures since 2017.

I bet they're still keeping my data though.

@kaidenshi @theowrites I deleted my account in 2019. A year or so ago, I started using Google Search's utility to find mentions of my personal info (email address, phone number, street address) and request revival from their index where appropriate. I keep getting notices that my personal information has been found on Facebook. But it won't allow me to request removal as "you are in control of this information." But of course, I'm not. I no longer have an account there. But obviously, they haven't deleted my data as promised.

Meanwhile, all the politicians want to entrust THIS EXACT SAME COMPANY with intimate knowledge of every user's real-life identity and a live audio/video feed inside every user's home.

For the purpose of making the Internet “safe” for “children”.

And shut down all alternatives, such as the Fediverse, because they're not “safe” for “children”.

And nobody's connecting the f#@%ing dots. 🤮 Because if they were, there'd be riots in the streets.

@kaidenshi My FB account consisted of exactly one photo and a few friends - lots more requests. I opened it, spent a week with it and decided it wasn't for me.

I was unable to delete the acvount. I tried a few times but it simply would not let me. So I abandoned it. This was 15 years ago, at least.

It struck me as creepy then and it has remained so.

@kaidenshi #DataMining now extends far beyond an intimate few databases, being sold to the highest bidder.

Indeed, the current US Administration is more #greed driven than even the Nixon one, and has blatantly flaunted #TechBros in their intimate circles, while arrogantly investing more and more in #FossiFuels and #crypto.

#Capitalism is collapsing. I highly suggest considering the #GlobalSouth for you and yours.

@kaidenshi Heh. Before I deleted all of these things, I painstakingly deleted each post, reaction, etc manually (or used a service). I'm not even sure that works but I don't trust any of these fuckers (and never again). I literally just did this for LinkedIn, and keep double checking that all previous posts, reactions, anything are gone.

@hyc My girlfriend uses FB, and she has told me in the past about a time she shared a mildly sexual, silly meme, something PG-13 rated at best, and got a community standards warning on it. No foul language, nothing explicit, just a cartoon double entendre. Meanwhile, she had been reporting people for posting racist memes and videos of actually horrid stuff (this was back when there was a wave of supposed beheadings and other atrocities making the rounds on the site). She was told those were not violations.

It makes no sense until you remember who owns the company and his political and financial alignments.

@kaidenshi I deleted my FB account at least 15 years ago because I didn't like their ethics, or lack thereof. They periodically send me emails about my account but unlike you, I refuse to log in. They want you to log in again. They hope to lure you back. I'm having none of it.
Everyone who knows me knows I am NOT on FB so if there's ever any activity from "me" it's not me. (Thankfully there hasn't been).

@kaidenshi No, it's them. I had a friend who used to work for FB confirm it. The best thing we can do is never open an account. Too late for that now.
We've done everything we can to delete our accounts. That's the best we can do. Maybe, someday, a law will be passed that makes it illegal to hold accounts dormant when a delete request has been made. Until then we just have to live with this. And not log in.

I replaced all my personal data with something else that i made up. Then i went thought the "are you sure" point and click adventure. I never looked back though. Didn't have a password manager back then, so I can't check to see if it worked or not, even if I wanted to
