    I self-hosted Jitsi for years, and it was great.

    But, a few months ago, I decided that I just wasn't using it enough to justify retaining it. So I switched to offering Signal instead.

    I meant to look at other, light touch, in-browser, FOSS options, but I haven't got round to it yet.

    @neil I have a Nextcloud Talk sitting idle here. Usually if we need something we mostly default to Signal as well. It might just not be worth it.

    @neil What did you move to? Moving off NC requires me to host multiple applications to get to the same feature set and even more need to keep an eye on issues.

    @neil @kobold

    What did you move to? I use NextCloud mostly for three things:

    • Syncing photos and Signal backups from my phone (works nicely on Android most of the time, their iOS app is totally unreliable).
    • Personal and family calendars (works nicely with a bunch of CalDAV clients. None of us use the web interface).
    • Contacts (should work nicely with any CalDAV client but NextCloud's sny with macOS has been broken for many years if you have any contact groups).

    I'd rather not have a massive pile of PHP that wants to be a do-everything platform for that limited set of uses.

    @neil @david_chisnall @kobold sync-in seems ok for files.

    I have a jitsi server because it's installed by the playbook that manages my matrix install, although i'm not sure if the moderator login was working last time I tried to use it.

    @kobold Forgive me for jumping in here ... you say:

    "It[0] might just not be worth it".

    I can't deduce what the "it[0]" refers to.

    * Using NextCloud
    * Using Signal

    @kobold OK, so you meant that "Nextcloud Talk" might not be worth the effort. Thank you.

    You can stop reading now if you like, but for anyone who might be interested, I'm going to explain my confusion.

    You said:

    "I have a Nextcloud Talk sitting idle here. Usually if we need something we mostly default to Signal as well. It[0] might just not be worth it."

    When you use "it[0]" here, the most recent thing you've referred to is Signal. To me, the word "it" usually references the most recent thing mentioned.

    But the semantics are at odds with that, because (as you say) you have mentioned that "Nextcloud Talk" is sitting idle ... so perhaps you meant that.

    It genuinely wasn't clear to me, and that's why I asked. I know that different people end up with different defaults in how they interpret these things ... a company I was consulting with once nearly made a multi-million pound mistake for exactly this reason.

    Written communication can be hard.

    @neil Ah fair, I wasn't sure you were looking for a self-hosted solution or something hosted by a friendly collective. I think BBB scales quite well... for bigger/lecture like conferences. But it's probably overkill for smaller meetings. We used it a lot (self-hosted) at my uni

    @neil same here. We switched to BBB, though it's a pain to go past firewalls, needs a stun server or some similar devilry. After that it works ok, but everyone seems shocked by its interface.

    @neil I've used GatherTown for literally years, but they changed their pricing structure, they are clearly aimed at an on-line office concept rather than "Having meetings", and today, without notice, they stopped allowing me to have guests in my paid-for office.

    We are investigating other options, including:

    * Work Adventure
    * Alfaview
    * Signal

    Pros and cons all round ... it would be nice to have a comprehensive analysis of the options somewhere.

    I like Alfaview, but it did partially fail in a recent meeting.

    And now I will read the sibling threads ...

    @neil

    If I could get Signal working on my Android tablet then that's what I'd use instead. As it is, most calls use Jitsi.

    We're chronically short of bandwidth. If I were to self-host a Jitsi instance, would all video and audio streams come into my instance and radiate out to all participants, or is the protocol more peer-to-peer than that, so that adding more participants increases the bandwidth use for every participant? I'm assuming the former, because it scales better, but that makes self-hosting at home impossible.

    @neil I assume it might be to reduce their TURN server costs (at least, I assume they run TURN servers?). But for the upsell thing I would have expected them to... you know, actually upsell. i.e. instead of saying "meetings are now limited" the announcement would have been "free meetings are now limited, but you can buy unlimited meetings for £x"

    @neil That's a shame, I use meet.jit.si for some things, although 95 minutes for free is more generous than any other competitor I'm aware of.

    I know some providers have locked down their Jitsi instances to prevent abuse (e.g. Debian only allows you to join if you have a Salsa account), so perhaps this is a similar move.

    @neil for video hosting, have you looked at vdo.ninja? All in the client (browser or app), after setup.
    I've mostly used it as a OBS feed, but it seems to have rooms and meeting options.

    @grant_h I've been looking at the landing page, I've read the beginners cheat sheets, and I've watched the first half of their introduction video, and I still can't work out what they actually do.

    Why can people not describe clearly and simply what they do?

    So frustrating.

    On the list for when I get an hour to unpick things.

    @neil am i right I'm thinking there's only affects jitsi calls on their server? i.e if you host your own jitsi you can still call as long as you like?
