in between building starports (I'm on my 4th) and flooding the bunker i had a modicum of gusto and threw together the collection of wires and rs232 adapters I'd bought, on the vague chance of it somehow working, and amazingly...it did!

since windows doesn't seem to have hyperterminal.exe anymore, instead I plugged the rs232 to USB adapter into my raspberry pi 2 tv machine and tried a couple of terminal programs and actually got lucky (picocom ftw)

so we have provable communications between 1986 and the present day 🥰

So things didn't exactly end up going the direction i expected tonight.

I was actually planning to do some droney, experimental bleepy noises tonight, but despite doing pretty well in general at the moment it seems I still had some pent up frustrations which could only be exorcised by cask-strength screaming acid techno at maximum permissable levels. In this case I'm the reactor that needed venting.

It's two tracks and they are both actually kinda introspective, but sometimes introspection takes in the form of a hammer.

there is peace in the noise

like meditating in an avalanche

let the 303s scream like we wish we could

give yourself to the noise.

*I have been recently informed that my music is good for motivation when running, or if you're trying to drown out the sound of fireworks for your dog.

New mix up!: Noise Exploration

yes the wheels are always turning here, more weird noises for your earballs. Long-form audio-triggered brain chemicals and associated side-effects:

Finally something I recorded fits on bandcamp!

This is a 24min live mix from this weekend. 24bit, highest quality flac.

It's good old fashioned wompy acid techno with fresh, locally sourced ingredients just like your grandma used to make it.

it's literally free electricity from the sky. like what the fuck. we have been played.

still tho, not too bad really. 4kwh in a day? that's bonkers. why isn't all electricity free from the sun? wtf humans

it seems like the solar panels on my roof aren't kicking out as much juice as they should. they're a somewhat mismatched set so may have to try them in a 2s2p or 4p config rather than the 4s as currently. weird things happen with serial when one of the party is different or unwell 😬.

they should really be maxing out this controller in the current sun and im only seeing barely 20a when the panels are good for 8a a piece (x4). the other array (3s2p) is kicking out 40-50a with only two more panels.

on the upside i deliberately ran my battery (2x~4kwh) pack down to 50% as a test to see weather we can recover that in one day, and so far it's looking likely, which is pretty sweet.

with further panel optimisations it should do even better 😎. another two panels to max out the main array and we ought to be ok over winter, hopefully 🤞🤞

I finally got that new mix up on the podcast \o/:

episode 063: cv-jam

This is an experimental mix using the MetalFetishist to drive the 777 over CVs & Gates which makes for a really interesting (and quite unpredictable) way of making grooves.

This mix goes all over the place both in terms of mood and tempo and despite the unpredictability I felt like it picked up on some nice stompy (and other) grooves.

As you would expect towards the end it gets a bit yompy ;-)

New podcast Episode: 061: Live set from STB

Yes after all my complaining and musing and ranting and nearly buying the wrong decks I ended up putting in the grind work and now I'm pretty happy with that live setup and the end result produced on it.

Boosts appreciated!

This mix is 50 mins and goes all over the place. It starts off quite mellow and minimal, then gets a bit trancey (see, i do melodies sometimes!) and has some nice deep techno moments. But sure as the wind and tides, inevitably it all descends into wompy chaos and we are immersed in a world of noise. Because the noise is all that ever was.

*new avi for music stuff so figured I'd post it here at the same time

that bluebox is such a capable and *densely feature packed* little device. there's so much it can do and the construction is absolutely beautiful. that they make it relatively straightforward to wrangle 12 tracks of audio, with each track having potentially multiple takes on such a tiny device with relatively few buttons is impressive. and it *works* too. its surprisingly fast to use.

in contrast to the microfreak it also has the *nicest* 1/8" jack sockets I've maybe seen on any device 👌

as seems to be my way, i got i to some music after coding. I'm trying a new way of assembling stuff using the multitrack features of the bluebox, which isn't something ive gotten too far into previously

it has this neat view of the overall timeline and you have up to 12 tracks you can use, and can record just the bits you want.

i figured it might be quite good for ambient stuff but actually it works rather better than i expected and it feels like one could hopefully) almost skip the editing stage after, especially as you cam have umpteen takes for each track too.

normally i like things to be all live and spur of the moment to a flattened mix, but sometimes i wish i could go back and change some bits. with this im still actually playing live, just brick by brick.

i can tweak everything right there in the bb (no computers), and then (presumably) do a final mixdown at the end, with there still being plenty of adjustability at that point.

very cool, much enjoy 😎

Following on from that TR8S experimentation... New Podcast episode. This served a a good brain-emptying mix after doing accounts. I didn't really have the spoons to set up a whole rig so this is just the TR8S into the digital recorder.

I had wanted to try and figure out what I did in episode 042 (going full krista) and see if I could replicate that degree of #yomp on a more compact setup, and figure out what made it work, and how to do more with the beats within that.

The TR8S has quite a lot of depth of settings for stuff if you really poke around so whilst it doesn't really volunteer filthy acid basslines, they can be coaxed out if you tickle it right, and the way you can stack settings up makes for some rather satisfying sounds.

Duration: ~15min, live mix, heavy drums/techno.

this will make more sense when i post the mix

unfortunately by now my mental reserves/fortitude are still at an all time low, so where at one point i would have said i was quite resilient (i may have been wrong tho), by now im so beaten down that I'm most certainly not.

im still pretty good on physical/physics challenges, hence i do ok at the farm, but stuff like this van breaking down bullshit, being forced back into debt (as is now the case) and having to exist among all these people just floors me, and im basically ready to check out permanently at the drop of a hat.

i don't like being dependent on them because inevitably at some point it is used as leverage, and for 20-ish years i wasn't, but unfortunately life threw me a number of curveballs and whilst i managed to dodge the morgue yet again, at this point i dont have a choice.

i guess it still beats the alternative (being properly homeless/dead) but there's not a lot of margin in it and i reserve the right to pursue alternative courses of action 🤷😔

i find it very confusing how some folks (in this case my folks) can be like 90% perfectly nice and normal people and then 10% utterly unhinged with the *worst* possible views.

i always pictured the original nazis would be goose-stepping everywhere and be nazis 100% of the time but i guess they had families and ate dinner and did normal stuff too.

i find it very difficult to reconcile the two sides of this though, especially as im still (currently) dependent on them for a residential address (which lets me insure vehicles, without which i would be 100% fucked, for example).

ngl seeing all the england flags hanging up round here feels somewhat 1930s-esque. i know i normally live under a rock as far as social contact and current affairs so maybe its not for the reasons i suspect but that seems like a not terribly subtle signal 😬

i dont remember it being this good when i recorded it 🤔
