    @Sheril - I always encourage everyone to support their local library. I think the library is a fundamentally important pillar of any free, open, democratic (in the philosophical sense), and decent community.

    @heroicthehobbyist @Sheril My local library goes far beyond just books - it’s a place for community. The staff is organising something fun for kids daily (Monday is video game tournament, Tuesday is RPG afternoon, Wednesday they do homework together, …) and every other day something for everybody.
    I went there first time like… five years ago and was blown away. By far one of the best usage of my tax money.

    @Sheril They don't even get mad if you don't return the books. You can just oops sorry and finally bring it back after they finally charge you for it and they're like OK, thanks.

    @Sheril @notjustbikes credited somebody else but I first heard it from him: imagine if libraries didn't exist, and somebody proposed them today, how the media, the rich, free market fundamentalists and conservatives would react to the idea, and what they would predict it would lead to.

    Then think about everything else they talk about, their claims and predictions on everything from transport to taxation, and realise they are probably about as wrong on those things as they would be on libraries*

    *not at all a direct quote, just my paraphrase of the sentiment

    @Sheril

    <rant>

    I live in the very affluent, educated, liberal city of Newton MA, a city full of professors and other highly educated people

    about 30 years ago we built a pretty nice new main library which is only accessible by car . . and we stopped funding the branch libraries, accessible by foot for children and the elderly

    The library has been throwing out lots of wonderful books, on the BS claim that there is a lack of shelf space (false) or that a book should be tossed if no one has looked at it in ten years, which IMO is BS

    meanwhile the branches are open a few hours a week, struggling to get by on donations

    I don't know if, over the years, the number of items checked out per day has gone up or down

    but I do know that most of the people actually present at the library are people with laptops

    I also know that for the last 30 years the library has used an electronic catalog and the software sucks

    @failedLyndonLaRouchite @Sheril have you had a conversation with any of your local librarians about any of your thoughts? i thought that most public libraries in usa are primarily supported by taxes, not donations. i also asked one of my local librarians about circulation recently, and they gave me a very lengthy and interesting explanation about why that particular library system has to take books out of circulation periodically. i also don't see a problem in library patrons using the library to sit and study/work/browse the internet on their laptops. many library programs are about tech literacy/teaching people how to use computers, anyway. libraries are public spaces anybody can use, that's the point.

    @Sheril Absolutely.

    And the 'right' (wrong, not right) do not wan to spare any of their hoards on even these precious institutions.

    Local library has toddler and parent singing that blows me away each time.

    It is a 'community' hub - that thing that the rich in their gated residential silos seemingly just do not get.

    @Sheril I also like the concept of the web archive's library, where you get many books for free, as long as you keep reading them you get to access the DRM'd content

    @Sheril Libraries are also a great place to just sit and do something quiet. When I’m out of town for work, I use them as a work and chill place. I catch up on my paperwork and then often draw or code personal projects. They have plenty of desk space, power outlets for charging, and a bathroom. Its great.

    It's been a looong time for me @Sheril but beautiful memories of older buildings, hazy light and tranquility.... you don't have to read to enjoy
