I just want to point out that the MAGANazi party tried the culture war bullshit with Zohran Mamdani. They tried, and it failed.

They tried the socialism thing. He waved it away by leaning harder into workers rights.

They tried the trans thing. He waved it away by leaning harder into trans rights.

They tried the immigration thing. He waved it away by leaning harder into immigrant rights.

The lesson here for Centrist Democrats is simple. You don't fight Nazis by giving up ground to the Nazis. You fight Nazis by leaning harder into the wind and standing up for individual rights.

@Lana Narrator: meanwhile in Germany the Centrists tried to get rid of Nazis by doing nazi politics. They failed. Again.

@Lana ...but if they did that they wouldn't get all those brib...err, "campaign contributions" from all those wealthy Nazis!

If Democrats were trying to fight, the ones in leadership around here (RI) wouldn't be taking money from organizations that describe themselves and the purpose of those "contributions" as "...advocacy efforts in alignment with the priorities of the Trump administration."

If you're trying to fight Nazis you don't take a check that has "Thanks for helping the Nazis! <3" in the memo line. But those "centrist" Dems will gladly lick Trump's boots for a dollar just like the GOP.

It's the voters falling for these tired old excuses over and over and over again who need to understand all of this; the politicians know exactly what they're doing.

@Lana Also, New York City can be considered sui generis in some ways, but Andy Beshear also refused to throw trans people under the bus and won re-election in a landslide.

It's like they think throwing potential allies to the wolves is a good way to build a coalition.

And inviting the enemy inside the fort is a good way to stave off attack.

Incredibly silly, and I would laugh if it did not do so much harm.

Every single capitalist is first in the queue for Government handouts. They are hypocritical socialists; they don't believe when they say and take the money when demanded and offered.

Calling someone a socialist is far from a slur as it's possible to get 😆🤦‍♂️

@Lana The problem, as I see it, is that anyone who is "centrist" in this, the Year of our Bob 2026, the clownshow of all possible timelines, is not our friend.

You cannot be a centrist in the face of genocide. You cannot be a centrist in the face of starving American children while billionaires buy yachts to fit inside their other yachts. You cannot be a centrist while everything America has ever built is dismantled in front of you, fed into the voracious maw of capitalist grift.

Those centrists have gladly moved the Overton window to the right and to the right and to the right...always with their compromises and their "let's not revisit the past".

Centrists got us here. We cannot afford to mollycoddle them any longer. This is a fight for our lives, our futures, and chance to fix the rot the centrists have papered over.

Yup. The assumption that centrists actually want to defeat fascists and not caucus with them is... generous. Perhaps overly so.

They'll harrumph loudly at a nazi sitting down at their table but they won't actually kick the nazi out.

@Lana A progressive democrat who actually walks that walk and isn't afraid of what the right will say? Truly a rare thing.

In the Dutch Parliament centrum politicians moved to the right to steal votes of far right, they made far-right stronger and so they failed! Again!

@Lana I suspect they're more motivated by the campaign donations than by actually winning.

...and money is the only language the oligarchs know; they don't have anything else to contribute.

Hopefully the oligarchs won't succeed in using the power of money to destroy the election process so they can control it with more money -- because otherwise, they will just keep losing and eventually we will have enough power to do something about them.

@Lana A few years ago when the Portland protests were super active and there were repeated confrontations with the feds, I was on a call with a county party leader who suggested the protests should “just” move a few blocks away from the federal building.

I said “I’m having a hard time thinking of a case where ‘let’s give the fascists a little more room’ was the right call, historically.” To his credit, I think he heard it: there was a lot of “Oh. Huh. Hrm.”

@Lana the problem with most people is that instead of confronting the bullies, they want the bullies to think they are cool so they'll leave them alone.

@Lana Damn, a lot of people in this thread think we should not vote for any less-than-perfect democrats. Won’t that just lead to the MAGANazis winning?

Well, that's certainly the lesson for lower-case, genuine democrats. I'm afraid centrist, upper-case Democrats are most likely not capable of grasping such wild ideas, let alone of adopting them.
