Parent-teacher conferences today. The verdict is my kid is friggin’ awesome.

IOS 27 seems to ignore the setting for "smart punctuation" for dictation. Or at least sometimes? It certainly shows up in about half the apps I use. and it hasn't gotten better since I explicitly turned it off.

While trying to figure something out last night I looked for some example svg files I had lying around and I found a few that were generated by some toy photo processing app a few years ago. It wasn't explicitly an svg app, it just happened to use it for its storage format.

Sort of. Except all it did was define a 1x1 rectangle for each pixel! I would love to understand how that seemed like a good idea.

Still futzing with SVG. I'm really enjoying it overall, but there are plenty of rough bits.

I have a <circle> on a colored background. I overlay a different colored <circle> with all the same metrics, on a different colored background, with a clip-path running through the middle of the circles. The color from the first just barely peeks around the perimeter of the second. Why?!? I get that quantizing curves is hard and sometimes arbitrary, but why is it *different*?

In an SVG, if I apply a clip-path to a <use> element which references a <symbol>, the clip-path in evaluated in the symbol's viewBox? Why is that desirable? I've already defined the symbol.

If I want to clip the already-constructed symbol, do I wrap it in a <g> and apply the clip-path to that? Will that work?

Hey academics: 'By consuming AI products (which is optional, nobody – nobody – is forcing you to do it as an intellectually–independent academic, which you are, aren’t you), you are fueling these crises and are therefore actively sabotaging and annihilating the hard efforts and work of many of your own peers in environmental or social sciences... Congratulations, you are now explicitly part of team “aggravating problems” instead of team “finding solutions”.'

I'm learning SVG as I go (obviously), doing a handful of images by hand, and overall it feels very much like learning HTML in the 1990s, in a good way, but that "no way…" moment made me take my headphones off, stare into space for a while, and practice some deep breathing.

I don't want to talk about how much time I lost today to the fact that SVG element names are case-sensitive. "Why isn't this <clippath> working?!?" 🤦

Wow, y'all are big fans of deplatforming fascists. 👍🏼

County Democrats monthly call tonight, a few jackasses got on zoom to disrupt the meeting with faked voices, nonsense comments, and spewing racial slurs in the chat. We're well into election season, I guess. :-/

Does anyone know of a good intro for making/using re-usable elements in SVG? I want to be able to define an object with parts/regions, then say things like "place an instance at XY, rotate by deg, color part 1 blue...".

I've done a little of this but it feels real hackish and like there has to be a better way than what i've stumbled into, especially the coloring part. Got a guide you know & like?

[Note: the SVG standards or a general SVG intro are not what I'm looking for here.]

There's a perhaps-less-charitable, more Freudian version of the motivation for this, and I think it might apply equally to both, as well.

It occurred to me while driving this morning that the IT industry's obsession with over-engineering everything, where we pretend the same infrastructure tools used by sites like Facebook make any sense at all for 99% of websites to be paying attention to, might be related to the same psychology that makes the F150 the best selling vehicle in America. Like, but what if one day you *do* have to haul three-quarters of a ton of gravel while also towing a boat?

Apparently the libera.chat folks have banned omarchy chans from their network. Good on them.

Spent much of the afternoon on two different hot sauce batches with peppers from our garden, getting a bit over a quart all together. These were simpler, not fermented varieties, but they both taste great, and I managed to not touch any membranes I shouldn't while making it. Win!

Okay wait a minute. I’m catching up here, but I’m watching Agatha All Along, on Ep. 4, and I just got to the part where Jen, the witch who is also a black midwife, reveals that she got “bound” after being invited to an obstetrics institute, and wow do I want to know who wrote this. That’s tapping into some very deep, specific modern cultural trauma, in a pretty informed and direct way. Someone on the writing team is Making A Point.

I'm going for a run earlier today than I otherwise want to be out of the house on a Sunday where I don't have else to do, because it is expected to hit 80° today, October 4.

This was... something. 7yo thought it was hilarious. I think the differences in modern production values really softened any scary bits (which is fine actually). I don't think I've ever seen the sequel; that's next on our list.
